  • Leichhardt NSW Council goes Fair Trade

Theres an article in todays Sunday Telegraph about Leichhardt council pushing for Fair Trade certification they are aiming to "encourage" local businesses to stock Fair Trade items including coffee.

Council leased properties will have almost no choice the way I read it.

I couldnt find a link to the article but heres one to the Council Resolution.

In the article a couple of baristas said council should stick to cleaning the streets etc.

Clearly too many bums on seats there with not enough to do...

Maybe they should actually research things before making stupid statements... Surprising that they dont pop a surcharge on rates so that everyone can support fairtrade equally  :-?

Councils...Subcontract out all the stuff that needs to be done, take a few junket trips to hastily arranged sister cities and, make lots of my-laws (aka by-laws) in the car on the way to "work" :

And now, we resume normal service  ;D

Yeah I read that today and it made my blood boil! Who the hell are they to dictate what you can can and cant sell in your premises. Especially if it could be an inferior product. Surely there are some laws that prevent this style of bullying - restriction of trade etc ?. Would the ACCC have a say?

      Tell them to get stuffed.

        What a joke.

Councils should stick to garbage and gutters...its about the best they can do I reckon... :

Of course, I am not a lawyer or anything resembling one, but Id say they wouldnt have a legal leg to stand on if this went to court.

Its as absurd as saying any business wanting to serve milk or milk products has to use dairy farmers. Or only tip top bread in the sandwich bar.

Re: Leichhardt NSW Council goes Fair Trade

Guys this is the usual politicking rubbish that gets into the sunday read and will never be heard of again. Besides, reverse psychology dictates that the minute some smart alec council rules this must be done, is when everyone will be up in arms for it not to be so.

Lots of suppliers already use fair trade movement coffee and dont even advertise the fact. If you waited for general public to ask you for it, the intended recipients of the bounty from the fair trade movement would be dead and buried as paupers. Its up to roasters to be good corporate citizens and use it as and where they can in the scheme of their business. That is the only way to get some turnover into the system to benefit the movement (my opinion).

These days to say you are using fair trade movement coffee is in many ways, a cynical way of trying to go "one up" on some other supplier. Eg We @ CosmoreX Coffee have never bothered telling our clients our decaff is DOUBLE fair trade movement certified (RFA & UTZ) as well as being certified organic. Do the clients care...no....they just want their decaff. Its the opposition suppliers that care in case if you say so ( that your product is FT MOVEMENT), it might attract some custom and god forbid, take it from them.

              Dont worry about it.

              Regardz,

Maybe they want to use fairtrade asphalt to fill in potholes?
