Re: Recession: How did it affect your coffee consumption?

Irrespective of a recession... I always plan to upgrade where coffee is concerned. But my next machine is a long leap from where I am, and needs a custom built house first, and a bit of three phase for the matching grinder.

Seriously though, in my case it went from buying roasted coffee regularly, to roasting a lot myself. Initially this didnt really reflect in saving money - it meant lots of experiments, but now, I am. But oddly enough, Im spending it on more greens and more experimentation. :P

Recession, What recession. I work in the road machinery manufacturing industry and we have orders for the end of 2010. Some of those are from Pacific Island countries. It seems that all the Governments are putting a lot of money into road construction.

As for my coffee habits I still drink at home and dont go to cafes much nothing has changed there.

Some of the pro-baristas that hang out around here might be able to confirm/discredit that from their own experience?
I would actually agree with that statement. The GFC has had no effect on coffee sales at the espresso bars that I work at...in fact, sales have gone up.

Ive stopped buying cofffee from cafes and switched to a home kit as this will save me money in the long run - and once I know what I am doing it will taste better as well!

    Recession??
The IT Dept. is busier than ever, 55+ hrs per week is starting to wear very thin indeed.
Our company has already invoice 95% of projected earnings for the current financial year and that was back at the end of March.
They just won a project to the value of fees worth 11 mil and the onflow effect of that interms of new potential work has already started.

I have to agree with Andy on this one though, its a way for business to brush clean and keep costs down. Our std company line is no pay rises this year because of the recession etc. despite beating their profit targets already.

    Mmmmmm..

Recession what recession. My Super has taken a bit of a belting and my shop turnover is more patchy but still within spitting of last years figures. Has it changed my coffee (and Syphon : ) buying not in the slightest. Things to be trimmed will be the winter escape down to 3 weeks from 4 and an expensive weekend to NSW downsized a little but life goes on.

Importantly much as the media might like it otherwise most of us still have a roof over our heads and food we brought on our tables. I am sure they would love to report on soup kitchens and beggars on every street corner >

If we cant afford that 60" plasma on the never never it is most likely a good thing for those who forgot the lessons of the last recession the odd punch in the nose is not a bad thing

For those out of work my sympathys and I hope you are sticking pins in the management and greedy bas!@#$ dolls who most likely kept there jobs >

Time for a Yemen and to heck with the expense 8-)

You might have missed it.BHP fell to $25, currently at $35 odd in 6 months... thats better than bank interest if you were "on it".(like a mug, I just watched others do well on that)
Ditto with Mac Bank and CBA. Luckily the missus bought up on some CBA shares when they were down to $25.

    Still plenty of good opportunities.

Fact is its really easy to put a negative spin on anything. If enough people appreciate the wonderful life we have and talk it up then the positive mood drives the nation forward.

...besides its a far nicer to live with a smile.
Hear, hear. Perception is a very strong driver of the current scenario.

Still, it would broaden my smile a bit more if some of the greedy sharks that contributed to the sub-prime fiasco are currently doing it tough.

Back on topic: my coffee consumption has been unaffected.

No effect really... still drinking coffee from home more than out, and have a new machine and grinder this year.

My conspiracy theory is that companies are using the "recession" as an excuse to downsize and reduce costs by hiring back (eventually)
Yep. Some companies were really quick to jump at the chance to run a broom or move operations somewhere else.

The whole Yakka/Bonds clothing saga was a good example of winding-up "an Australian legend" and going off-shore. Truth be known nearly all of their clothes were made in Bangladesh, Indonesia and China LAST YEAR, well before their "economic crisis" announcement.

Couple of Guys I Know have lost 4-500K ages 59 and 61, not happy chappies, They need the money shortly..
Sure. My ol man (63.5 yo) would have dropped half of his lifetime super savings in the last 12 months too (I havnt discussed it with him) so I understand their pain but your "couple of guys" have only lost 500k if they pull all their super out today and I assume they wont be moving anything for at least 5 years anyway.

If they retire in 5 years and the market is still low then dont take the lot out, just draw what they need to live... my bet is that in 5 years a fair bit of the "lost" money will be back anyway and will continue to recover unless it was spent on dodgy QLD property trusts.

I read most of that article in this Sundays paper.
I choked at the "Grinders cost between $50 and $200" bit.

Maybe thats how I missed the following:

"Andrew Freeman, who runs Coffee Snobs, an online coffee-lovers forum, said the quality of domestic espresso machines had improved dramatically."

    Very posh...........

I have watched my super for the last 30 years and made an adjustment to the mix before it started losing to much.
Ive lost a little, but nowhere near what others have lost by doing nothing.
Now Im watching for when to adjust again, to take advantage of the rise when it comes.

I didnt do cafes before and still dont home is better and far cheaper.

As to reducing home consumption. Unless it lasts for more than 3 years its not gonna happen. Some people saw the hard times and higher prices coming and stocked up before they hit.
