  • Use by dates on beans from retailers.

    Hi all

Just got some nice coffee from Tobys Estate today for trying (Organic East Timor) but also picked up some Italian Roast Blend from Gloria Jeans so my wife and I would have two to try. The Tobys one is packed on the spot and the beans are probably pretty fresh. At Gloria Jeans it was already packaged and sealed. It wasnt a vacuum sealed pack and I was going to ask when it was packed but decided it probably was a silly question. Why silly you may ask? Well I noticed there is a use by date on the Gloria Jeans pakage - 28 Feb 2007 :-)

    Mike,

I dont think its a silly question, in fact probably a bloody good one!. Having roasted a few batches you really notice the drop in bean freshness after one week and after two weeks they are just about done. Now thats for a bunch of beans that arent vac packed, just sealed in a zip lock and stored in a airtight container. Id really like to know what defines the usedbyness of those beans, especially as it is two months down the track. When I bought some beans from the aroma fest earlier this year I noticed they were stamped with a roast date.

Dont be hesitant to ask cause you might sound like a snob. I mean thats why we are all here right?

    Cheers,

    Matt

Eleven weeks from now, let alone from the unknown date when Gloria Jean was packed. And they call that "fresh" I suppose.

Mind you, thats possible no worse than packed coffee in supermarkets.

And people wonder why we roast our own.

        Hi
Two months or 11 weeks ? That use by date was a 2007 not a 2006 even !
        Yikes.

Sheesh, I didnt even notice I had written off a year. This time of year Im luckly to know which way is up Give it a try as it might be alright now. However it sounds like you may have a back-up bag on your hands for when you run out of the fresh stuff and need a hit, or when somebody drops around who isnt worth wasting the good stuff on. I used to have a bag of Harris for that before I got the roaster.

            Hi All,

I think that UBD is only intended to satisfy the law, ie the date by which, if consumed, will not be harmful to the consumer. I dont think there is any intention by GJ to warn of the potential for damage to ones taste buds ,
