The Cuba Turquino Lavado

Hi all,

Firstly Id like to say that today is my first day at CoffeeSnobs, and I am very glad to be a member. This co-op is an excellent idea, and great way for us all to enjoy a huge variety of fine coffees at great prices.

I would like to suggest one of my fave coffees for consideration of a bulk purchase - the Cuba Turquino Lavado.

For those of you who know Alan Frew, he calls this coffee "Cafe de Cuba". But, more widely, it seems to be known as Cuba Turquino Lavado.

I have been a great lover of this coffee for some time now. I build a lot of my own espresso blends on a Cuban/Mandheling base, which to my humble palate is simply perfect.

How to describe this coffee? Well, since I am no expert Ill quote Alans own words - "sweet golden syrup nose and smooth, full bodied middle palate sliding into a rich soft finish. One of the best coffees I have ever tasted."

An absolutely stunning coffee that I am sure many of you will enjoy just as much as I do.

Personally, should we consider purchasing this coffee, I am in for at least 10 kg.

Welcome to the group. Nice to have you here.

In regards to the "Cuba Turquino Lavado" I am fairly sure there is an availability list coming up very shortly and if it is not on the list, mention it and if enough people vote for it, I would say if we can get it, it will be avalable for us all.

With the amount of beans we all ordered last month I am hoping like many of us, that the suppliers will be offering some extra special beans to CoffeeSnobs. There are currently two polls on offer Ones a De-caff the other is the Sumatran.

This group buying is an excellent way to access beans compared to buying from the much dearer retailers as you can clearly see from all of the previous polls.

Thanks for the suggestion Avi, we will look into it, we are just looking at our next polls now. Quite a few people missed out on the Yirgacheffe and Kenya, so those might go back up and well look into this one aswell.

Im afraid there is not good news on the Cuba. I received an email from A supplier They included the following newspaper article that appeared in the CUBA NEWS earlier this year reporting on Cubas Coffee Crop:

"Cubas coffee crop the worst in 50 years
HAVANA, April 29 (Ariel Delgado Covarrubias / www.cubanet.org) - The Ministry of Agriculture reported this month that the current coffee crop is down 5% in relation to last years, and calls it one of the worst of the last 50 years, said sources who had seen the report that has not been made public.

Crop estimates range from 190,000 to 240,000 60-kilogram sacks. Last year Cuba exported 67,857 sacks; this year 38,203.

Up to the year 2000, Cubas coffee export revenue was around 20 million dollars; that figure could now be half due in part to decreasing world prices.

Agriculture officials attribute the lower yields to drought in the eastern end of the island, where 85% of the coffee is grown for domestic consumption. The rest, a better quality bean, is exported mostly to Japan.

Other factors contributing to the decrease are the lack of resources, especially fuel".

One of our suppliers have trialed a Dominican Republic coffee as a substitute for the Cuban & in their opinion this is a fine replacement; new stock of this type is currently on the water to them and they expect to see the coffee in Melbourne in mid September at the earliest. Would anyone be interested in this?

A supplier have trialed a Dominican Republic coffee as a substitute for the Cuban & in their opinion this is a fine replacement; new stock of this type is currently on the water to them and they expect to see the coffee in Melbourne in mid September at the earliest. Yes please!  If this is anything like the Dominican Soliman that Alan Frew was selling, its magnificent.

We sure are, FB. The trouble is, every time a new bean goes up, I cant resist the temptation to get some and try it. I think Im going to have around 40kg of various beans at home soon!

Phil, sorry to break this to you....but youll be luck to stop at 40kg!!! Im quickly approching 70 with no end in site. Our friends think Im a little strange.

You just figured out our secret Phil, we are trying to temp you ......Well they do say coffee is addictive!

You know you are stange when you no longer have a Bean cupboard, but a Bean Room! (Rich calls it our Green Room)

Thank you for looking into the Cuban, I really appreciate it. From what I hear Dominican coffees are exceptional. From what Phil (leopard) says, it seems that its reputation is backed up by reality.

Id love to try a good Dominican. Thanks again Rae!

Now all the excitement is over on the Yemini is there any further news on this Dominican arrival? (Dont mind me - I thought Id just add to your workload a bit!)
