Re: Storage of green beans
Has anyone else seen the new packaging for Daterra beans? Sealed bags in a box, apparently to help them retain their moisture content. . .

Re: Storage of green beans
Interesting idea Javaphile.
I have one of those bags at the moment and access to more if I need.
Hmmmmm....

Re: Storage of green beans
Just make sure youre using plain paper bags. Not waxed ones.
Another alternative I plan on implimenting here is modifying the 70kg burlap coffee bags to hold smaller amounts. I plan to sew/stitch them up to divide them into 4-8 seperate pouches. The bags will be folded over length wise and hung over a dowel rod or pipe (stitched in place) with ropes tied to the ends and slung over the clothes rod (changed from a 2.5cm wooden dowel to a 5cm iron pipe) in a closet in a climate controlled room.
This will allow the storage of a lot of beans in a compact and easily accessible manner while keeping them off the floor and away from the critters and allow the beans to properly breathe.

Re: Storage of green beans
I am building a cupboard for storing my beans - as soon as I can find a cabinet maker with free time that is!
I like the idea of a bean chest, but have nowhere to put it at the moment.

Re: Storage of green beans
Ive knocked up a few of my own from bags my son brought home from work.Originally posted by Flo link=1138339450/15#15 date=1174213783Hey Goodies...if you have access to a sewing machine just go to your local haberdashery supplier (ie: fabric type stuff) and grab some calico and knock yourself up a few bags...dead easy. If youre too mucho to be seen in a girls shop just convince yourself that its for mens business and youll be cool! (until one of your mates sees you) :P
Girls before you flame me Im just kidding!! (been to Spotlight more than once myself!)
They were old promotional ones from some long forgotten wine festival or similar.
They would make great shopping bags but were way too big for what I wanted.
I can make 3 decent sized bean bags from them.
Reminds me, now that I have a few more varieties I have to make up a few more.
And nothing girlie about it fellas, my father was a tailor.

Re: Storage of green beans
Thanks Andy for the confirmation, and your right they probably wont last very long. Cant wait to jump into the front lines of the next bean bay to order up some more of them greens. Beans that is.

Re: Storage of green beans
Hey Flo... Spotlight is cool, I have been known to buy all sorts there in the past and then spend the rest of the day swearing at the sewing machine.
Goodies...
The paperbags will be fine for the starter pack beans, it will stop them sweating and besides, I cannot see them lasting for any great amount of time anyway.

Re: Storage of green beans
So are you saying that the paper bags are no good for the time being?
I will only probably keep the starter pack beans in the paper bags (only if this is OK), then keep the future lot of green beans in their calico bags they come in. Once I finish the 5kg of roasted beans (now down to 3kg) I received the other week, then I will get stuck into roasting the green bean starter pack.
If someone can let me know if storing my green beans in paper bags is NO Good and it will effect my beans in the short term then I will remove and find another way of storing them.

Re: Storage of green beans
I keep my starter pack beans in the bags they came in, in the calico bag. So far they seem to be okay.
I do have an issue with Moths in the cupboards and have seen there is a new non toxic anti moth product. Will hunt it down and see if it solves my problem.

Re: Storage of green beans
I have only got the starter pack as this is my first pick up of green beans. As you know the starter pack is packed with various green beans in plastic bags. I only have the one calico bag it came in so until I start to build my collection of these bags, I need to store the first lot of beans elsewhere out of the plastic bags.
I eventually want to store my beans in a wooden coffee chest of drawers, each drawer having the ability to store the 2.5kg of green beans we order off the Beanbay with about 9 or 12 different drawer compartments with labels on the front.
Sort of like what Veneziano Caffe have got but maybe on a smaller more home use level.

Re: Storage of green beans
Ditto Flo. No need to remove them from their original shipped container.
And the bags do breathe. Out! My stash in is the inbuilt wardrobe in the spare bedroom, and the place reeks of green beans. In a few days were going to have a family guest stay there. Hope she loves the aroma.

Re: Storage of green beans
I have got some paper bags to put my green beans in, but they are like the ones you get at your local corner store deli, white sandwich style bags that feel like they have a slightly waxy feel to them.
Does anyone know if this bags are OK to store my greens in or if I am to store them in paper bags do they have to be the brown paper bags you buy at the supermarket?

Hi Boris,Originally posted by Boris link=1138339450/0#7 date=1138789780(My nanas linen cupboard had more moth balls in it than a cave full of moths ;D)

Luckily, we dont have to worry about moths where we are.... sub-zero winters seem to keep them at bay. Lots of other nasty little buggers around though, various species that seem to think of nothing else than relieving one of ones blood.... and with nine inch teeth to boot (well, maybe not nine inches :-[, but close)
