Im living back with my parents for the time being, dad loves having a Silvia and superjolly in the house. The advantage is that he really chews through the coffee so i get to roast more.

I have a policy in our house, you can do what ever you like on the gear strictly on the proviso that......, you refill the boiler, keep the water level up, and clean up, we have the inlaws living with us for a while now and they love to have a go, and i dont mind, and they are geting better, they still froth milk till it is like the inside of an aerobar!, and they acknowledge that my pours are better, and as long as that acknowledgment remains then it is a happy house

I have had only one experience like this. A couple of years back when I was living with my sister, my dad dropped in to visit her while I was out. I came home to find Silvia had been used. Not happy but I got over it... That was until I spoke to him next and he informed me that my coffee machine was a heap of junk and that it made a terrible coffee. Turns out he filled a mug up an inch from the top entirely from the PF and just added a small slurp of cold milk. Aaahh how I cringed when I heard that! Yep, its the machines fault for sure!!

Anyone who knows me is aware the penalty for touching my gear whilst im not around is DEATH!!!!

Unfortunately for me they also know that by asking if they can be supervised to make a coffee from my set up usually always ends with me taking over about the time it gets turned on :-?

I guess im a bit of a sucker....they know my weakness!

I used to loan out my spare machine but when I say how it was treated I quickly reclaimed it!

    What I learned:
People who dont care what sort of coffee they drink, are quite happy to steal it and leave the machine dirty.

    Hide it.

    Oh so TRUE....

They will also be the ones to complain when there are no Beans or milk either

    Story--sort of/maybe OT:

The espresso machine bought for the office by the outgoing CEO was always well-used. I bought good beans on the way into work and the only cost was 50¢ a cup. The contributions tin never paid for the coffee, but the shortfall was made up by the social club, who also bought the milk and sugar. Cleaning was a chore that was shared by only a couple of us snobs, and the admin staff (who had no choice!).

Then the price went to $1 a cup because the machine was out of warranty and we needed to put something aside for servicing. It still only barely paid for the coffee. The machine continued to need cleaning by the select few.

Finally the management transferred it downstairs where it was difficult to access, and had a commercial company place a pay-by-the-cup machine in the kitchen. The cost was $1.20 a single. The result was very weak coffee, but they cleaned the machine weekly (after the admin did their bit).

Only three or four of us dedicated souls, who muchly preferred the downstairs coffee to the stale beans upstairs, persisted in the make-it-yourself ritual. There was no coffee when there were meetings downstairs, and you had to open up, clean up, and lock up to get a cup. There was a big old honour tin for contributions--we asked for $1 a cup, and you could have a double for the same price.

In 4 months the downstairs machine made a PROFIT of over $60!

    What I learned:
People who dont care what sort of coffee they drink, are quite happy to steal it and leave the machine dirty.

    Hide it.

My earlier comment was, obviously, tongue in cheek.

To answer the question seriously, I would say stash it for two reasons. 1. Obviously it doesnt get damaged in a cupboard. 2. It puts people in their place and reminds them not to take it for granted. After all, its your machine, not the companys. They should be showing some respect by cleaning up after themselves and paying you the money they agreed to.

Stash it. They need to know their place.

Its a shame my aeropress doesnt fit inside the chimney, or I would be tempted to take a popcorn maker too.

Some great & funny suggestions there guys, thanks. I particularly love the idea of taking the group handle with me!

Perhaps the machine will mysteriously break down during my last afternoon before leaving. I still have the old EM4800 with an unpressurised Krups basket.

Of even greater concern is what I am going to do to satisfy my cravings whilst away! I really should get myself a aeropress/kyocera combo! I dont want to get stuck driking Starsucks whilst o/s.

Leave it there, tell everyone theyre welcome to use it, then take the group handle with you.  ;D
then theyll put ground coffee in the water tank and see if a coffee comes out...

get an aeropress so that when they inevitably use it wrong (microwave it, put it on the stovetop, put instant in it) then at least its only $50 to replace

I returned to the EM6910 after 6 months of being "between contracts".
The machine wasnt as bad as Id imagined it might be.

Hopefully the other 2 confident users will take up the slack caused by your absence.

CJ, it sounds like it could be time for it to go in for a "service" while you are away, and it will be appreciated all the more when you both return ;D ;D ;D
