If you really need pos software for a cafe and its not just a nice to have, then I think youd be nuts to instal freeware, if you can find it. Im of the view that you get what you pay for, including the support when you need it most.

        Good luck with your choice.

Very true Dennis....But like a lot of things some are just so over priced. Or have too many features we will never use.
What are some you have used?

PhatBoy, you really need to decide what youre going to use this software for. Is your entire business going to be based around it? IE, are you going to compile sales reports, turnover figures, finance data, store customer information, etc?

If you are, you will probably want to go with a commercial solution which provides support. I dont think a freeware solution would suffice, but certainly the few opensource applications that Ive been trialling are working quite well.

What are some of your requirements for the software?
Where will you be running it?
How do you intend to access it?

Theres a difference between having a single computer in your cafe and only using the program/application on the one computer, and using different computers for different functions (ie, computer out the front for sales, computer in the back office for data reporting etc)

            What are your exact requirements?

JR, simplicity of use is number 1. Clean layout, able to send receipts to the kitchen. We wont be looking at much in the way of data reporting, just end of day takings with ability to see quantity of items sold.

PhatBoy, Ill be having a meeting tomorrow with a winery (I know, sounds wierd) but they are looking into PoS solutions for their cafe/front of house stuff. I know they do print receipts and stuff, but Ill ask what theyve been looking at.

Meanwhile, Ill keep an eye out tomorrow morning when Im doing my usual get to work and pretend to work for an hour before actually doing some work routine, while everyone filters into work and makes their instant coffees!
