    Im a topic frenzy today. :P

    I recently read a comment Good coffee where? > WA section under Epics thread.

    My colleague ordered a long macchiatto, where we discovered that long maccs to the west are made with a double espresso & a lot more milk (probably the drink I should have ordered), rather than as a stained long black.
    This made quite curious, Ive yet to travel the scene over the east and experience some eastern coffee in Australia. Is it true that while we do our Long Maccs as a double shot + milk, they do them as stained long blacks over east? (dash of milk into a long black)

    Are there other differences noted that Ive yet to discover in the typical listing of coffees. I remember when I was working over at Tiger Tiger, I striked up a conversation with a gentleman from the east and he also mentioned slight differences between the coffee we serve over in the west. Minus the details, which I didnt feel like asking at the time. ;D

    since when is a macciato a long black with milk?

    Each cafe differs. I think there was thread on this a while back. Id use a double shot + dash of steamed milk.

      Im lucky enough to travel domestically for work and as a result get to drink coffee all over the country. I agree with Yeeza, each cafe differs.

      Personally, I havent really seen anything that would lead me to believe that east coast cafes have fundamentally different approaches to how they serve certain drinks compared to west coast cafes. I have seen small amounts of variation from cafe to cafe though, regardless of geographical location.

      Never seen a long mac made as a long black with a dash of milk, only ever as a double shot (of a sort, maybe a triple rist) with a stain ....

        You are 100% correct in my opinion.

        Each cafe IS different. And yeah, when is it a long black with milk? Surely that is a long black with milk!

        I have heard a theory that a long mac is a long black with milk and a double mac is a double shot and a dash of milk.

        All very confusing for the consumers I guess......

          It is definitely the case i must say..!
          only being new to Perth (from Sydney), i have been caught out a few times. >

          Even though he hasnt typed it.. im gathering that Robstar still means double shot when he is saying long black (i would hope so, especially if you have worked at tiger tiger).!?!

          Most (except for the few of the better cafes) will essentially serve you a latte if you ask for a machiatto. and usually in one of those stupid conicial glasses witht he handle...!!!

          I have since learnt the best and only way around it... is to order a "Traditional Mac" :

          after nearly a year here i am now used to it and i have my cafes of choice anyway, with nearly all of them serving a mac the way it is meant to be anyway.

          Urbanistar for me... Leigh always makes a great Mac.

            I reckon you should drop me a name of one of those cafés so I can go in and pulp fiction the place. Well essentially I would say Ive always served a macc (traditional or topped up), med macc (only at Tiger) long macc in a way that the customer was always expecting/wanted.

            Yet I may have not made it clear, a couple others have said to me that over east they take a long black aka. double shot espresso over hot water, add a dash of milk and call it a long macc, which made me go wtf. :P Reminds me of the time I had ordered a long macc at the Sheraton not long ago here in Perth actually, I received a long black with a dollop of foam on top.. ew..

              I always made a long mac in Melbourne as a long black with a dollop of microfoam and a small dash of milk.
