  • My puck looks like a disaster movie

    Got a new problem. Actually, the coffee tastes great, so might not be much of a problem.

    Ive been getting nice, solid, shower-screen-imprinted pucks consistently.

    But then...in the last couple of days when I remove the GH all looks fine, then suddenly the surface of the puck starts to bulge, then crack, much like Los Angeles in the trailers for the movie 2012.

    What does this indicate? overdosing? brew pressure too high?

    We have been using a new bean, Tekongon from Aceh, probably irrelevant but havent noticed the phenomenon otherwise.

      Could be a combination of grinding too fine and/or dosing too much. Also, is the coffee quite fresh? Perhaps leave it to rest a few days more. Fresh coffee can expand a lot when brewing.

      I would try dosing down and coarsening up the grind; one at a time until you know the effects.

        My pucks do that slightly when the coffee is very fresh. It never seems to affect the taste so I just attributed it to a gradual release of pressure after handle unlocking.

          Not overly fresh, about 12 days. Tried coarsening, made a bit of a difference to the bulging etc, but I think resulted in a loss of flavour, so in agreement with:

          , I think Ill go back to a finer grind.  If it means I never win 1st place in a beautiful puck competition, so be it.
