Re: 2010 AASCA National Championships - Jan 29-31

Well, I had a brilliant weekend - first the pleasure of ScootGal and ScootaKid staying with us (thanks once again for tweaking my technique, Scoots, theyve been pouring beautifully again today!) and then a quickish drive down the freeway to the Gold Coast.

I was just enthralled for the most part, watching all the competitors - particularly the Coffee in Good Spirits Comp - and really feeling for those that were so nervous. Having been up on stage myself many times before for dancing, I can fully sympathise with the shaking hands and the trying to centre yourself. There was one poor guy towards the end, that I tried to send a psychic "stop and take a deep breath" to, but he obviously didnt hear me!

Having said that, the calibre was absolutely phenomenal and some of the latte art was beautiful. Im still blown away with both Fiefys Smoking Dog, Wills Butterfly (our winning man) and the first competitors (Habib? I think) Dragon and Pheonix representing Yin and Yang. Top job guys! [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

I too cringed a bit at the drippers and really felt for the guys, if thered only been an extra minute for each of the competitors, I think there would have been some different results in the end, with a bit more opportunity to redo shots but I guess thats competition for you. Although he didnt win, I really liked Tims presentation and think he did an excellent job from a spectator point of view.

It was really great to catch up with a number of people - Scoots, Lartay HCK, AM, Andy, Gra, Luca, Sean Edwards and Brad from BeanScene. If you were there and I didnt catch you, my apologies - I was too busy sitting in my front row seat transfixed!

And finally, a candid shot (sorry about the blurryness, he was trying to dodge the shot!)

    Cheers
    Di

More than one barista on the weekend suffered from "drippers" that didnt really open-up and made the audience cringe for the barista. In fact it seemed there was a pattern that the right side group on more than one machine seemed to be the one giving the grief.
Yep, there does seem to be the potential for differences between either group on the Aurelia. I could guess that some competitors managed this with slightly different techniques for each group, but still within the tolerances for the tech scoring criteria.

The biggest thing I took away from the weekend was just how much work and attention to detail is required to compete at this level. Learning the idiosyncrasies of every tool and piece of equipment, coffee, milk and yourself and how to best manage that in competition takes months of work and practice. I am in complete awe of anyone who even considers taking on the challenge.

and to reiterate once again - if you have the time, join AASCA and volunteer for the events. Youll have an awesome experience and learn a lot! Especially how to clean things within an inch of their lives. ;D

...or thats what I looked like through your eyes after you sampled those "good spirits" sig drinks?

Re: 2010 AASCA National Championships - Jan 29-31

I was fortunate enough to be able to take the day off work on Friday and to have my 38 1/2 week pregnant wife agree to look after our 18 month old for the day as I would have to leave a bit after six in the morning and wouldnt get home till after 7pm.

After some back and forth in the previous weeks with the organisers I ended up being able to volunteer as a judges liaison for the day. This basically meant that I was able to go on stage with the judges and do all the visual and auditory bits that you can do as a judge but without being able to taste the coffee (maybe I should have been a runner hazchem   ) I was also able to listen in to the judges calibration after each round (for the flight of judges that I was with) which was good.

I really enjoyed my time through the day, learnt a lot and was good to say hi to people I rarely see and also meet a few that I had never met before.

I think I mustnt have been in the most gregarious mood as it seems like there was lots of snobs about that I didnt say Gday to.

Id certainly second what hazchem has said, join up with aasca, pay your fees (or work somewhere that will pay them for you) and explore the opportunities to get involves at whatever level you are able. I decided to join as a way to increase my exposure to both top level coffee and top level coffee making.

I would have posted earlier but Ive been hanging out at the hospital with my wife and our early arriving daughter Eva Blanche (arrived yesterday at 9.25 am so probably just as well I didnt try to negotiate to head down to the finals on Sunday as the pre-baby excitement all started on Sunday evening)

It was a standout, thats for sure...

Ive got a few pics but seeing as my biggest annoyance of the day was how much of the photographers backsides we got to see, I really didnt get to take many. I really think that they should just tell the photographer to get in, take some shots and get out. Either that or get a bigger lens and go stand somewhere else. Because Im sure that we werent the only spectators who wanted to see the live stuff as much as the stuff up on screen. In my opinion, it was the most off putting part of the show for the audience. I nearly yelled out to the guy to get out of the way more than once!  ;D
