Re: caffeine free for a week, can you do it?

I think it would be easy for me to be caffeine free for a week if i didnt have to go to work. If i was at work without coffee i would be really sluggish and slow at my job. I dont get headaches or any other symptoms like other people. :

You poor soul, I know how you feel.

When I went home to Malaysia I stubbornly refused a coffee which is really just Nescafe with a ton of condensed milk in the bottom and had the worst headache - which just felt like a 14 day hangover!

Then I remember I couldve drunk some Coke. Damn!!

I just went a week without coffee.
Day 1 I was in shock. How could this happen? Bean supplies never get that low! I rocked back and forth, staring at the cold Pav with far less vigor than my normally hyped-up self might have managed.
Day 2. I thumped on about the stupidity of letting the bean reserves dwindle and wept openly in the coffee aisle of the supermarket. When an old woman suggested I might "need a cuppa" I howled and fled.
Day 3 I gave that tea-drinking, coffee-hater man of mine what for. I told him there would be no tea until there was coffee in the house, but he only shrugged and said "ok". Typical weak milky tea drinking response. Let it be known: I kicked a man in the shins, just to watch him cry.
Day 4 I looked over the old gold bags and remembered the good times we had had. I hugged them to my chest and slept on the kitchen floor. It was gritty, because I didnt want to sweep up the last lingering scent of the Volcan Galeras.
Day 5 I swept up. It seemed more respectful to set those few remaining grinds free, on the open breeze of a sea-side cliff, accompanied by a leonard cohen mixtape.
Day 6 I bought a selection of teas and Day 7 I found myself able to drink them, although not with the same pleasure I had once taken in my morning beverage.

Day 8 and coffee arrived. It was late in the afternoon but I couldnt hold off, brewed up immediately and spent the early hours of the morning spamming my friends facebook pages, randomly stabbing at the keyboard, suggesting various scientific experiments that my agile mind found quite sensible at the time but now cannot make head nor tail of.   Im not sure how I expected to transplant my consciousness into a hamster, but apparently it would have been of great benefit to the military industrial complex and heralded a new age for mankind.

Actually it was only 4 days & it was hell but I did drink tea and whilst it did nothing for me, it did fill my mouth and so stop the constant whining about how crap every other available coffee option is, to the relief of my friends, family and neighbours.
This whole post was pure GOLD melicious, GOLD I say.
    8-)

This might even have the makings of Leonard Cohen MTV film clip!

Well, I suppose this thread is to blame ... I mean, this thread inspired me.

Were flying home after our year away in Bulgaria this weekend, and thought it would be a good idea to kick the caffeine addiction prior to: i) trying to sleep on a plane and ii) jet lag. Also, the very nice coffee we bought from Square Mile in London had run out, and we didnt really want to follow it up with Bulgarias typically stale and dodgy beans!

So, 5 days ago, we gave away our travel grinder, packed up the Aeropress, and went without.

My headache has been day-on, day-off so far! Strange! Worst on day three but fine on days two and four. Today is day five and Im a bit headachy again but coming out of it. My wife was worst on day two (when I was fine!) but good thereafter. She must have been less addicted?

Ive done this before and its strange; I never notice any symptoms other than headaches. Others say they feel less lethargic (or more so), or that theyre better able to concentrate... for me, its just a headache. A very specific one, mind you: right behind the eyes (esp. my right eye) and across the forehead.

My conclusion is that, yes its a bit disturbing that I get 4-5 days of headaches when I dont drink coffee, but the fact that I feel nothing else different assures me that caffeine is one of those acceptable addictions. I dont like to think that Im damaging my body by what I ingest - Im pretty convinced that moderate caffeine consumption is fine!

Oh, I should say, my consumption over the last year has been 2 cups a day (+/- 1 cup). Drank more last year when I worked at a cafe and was home roasting (of course)! Also, we were getting the occasional "hit" from cola or tea - I suppose thats cheating, but youll be pleased to know it didnt help with the headaches!

    Cheers
    Stuart.

I love coffee, but I dont think my life relies on it. I can still go on a day without even noticing I havent had a cup. But its still a staple I enjoy very much.
Im much the same. Ive been forced to go without coffee for the last six weeks (I will admit to weakening last weekend ) I love my coffee but I havent had bad cravings.

You go to all the trouble of consuming the best coffee you can and then drink that stuff
    Well the alternatives are ....

    Mother
    V
    Rockstar
    Red Eye
    etc etc....

My point is this...I cant bring myself to drink tea as i believe it tastes like dirty dish water. Whenever im out and about and cant find a decent enough coffee shop and trust me, im the type to walk out of 95% of cafes i enter....Red Bull or something similar is the only alternative when i need a caffeine fix.

Do i know what they put it it?...no but i font really care! I just want my caffeine fix!

This all reminds me of a bumper sticker:

"I gave up drinking, smoking and sex--it was the most horrifying 30 minutes of my life!"

I simply could not do it and commend anyone that can
