    Newbie here!
    Have had a cheaper coffee machine for three yrs, made OK coffee. Always had a decent grinder, learnt that early on.
    Went on a coffee course and hubby decided to upgrade. After much trial and error we have finally got the milk happening but for the life of us cant get a decent extraction. We have tweaked coffee volume, grind size and tampering, up and down to no success.
    What happens is when you extract it takes a good 5 secs before anything comes out, then only a trickle comes out, then a gush of watery coloured fluid. If I wait for 20 secs or so Ive got a cup of bitter water! Generally the coffee is anywhere between bitter and watery with no crema in sight. Occasionally Ill get a hint of crema but no where what it should be, especially from a new beaut machine.
    Any suggestions gratefully received. Im going to have to go and buy one soon if I cant get a decent cup of coffee.

      This looks like channelling.

      Please try to describe your dosing and tamping process.

      P.S. How fresh is your coffee?

              Sorry for the delay, still getting to grips with this website, only just realised you had replied. Thought nobody wanted to talk to me!
              Machine - Rancilio
              Grinder - Sunbeam cafe series. Have tried from 3-16 on grinder.
              Hubby specifically went out to get fresh coffee. Just looked at the bag Grinders BB 11/2010, um could be the beans?
              Fill the head to rounded over top edge of head, then knock the head side with the tamper to level coffee, then gently tamp coffee to level and turn group & coffee upside down to check. im aiming for a level of coffee at a line in head.
              Any suggestions?

                There is your number one problem, there is a lot of discussion regarding the "ideal freshness" but generally once it is 4-5 weeks post roast it is past its best and what you have there is many months past its roast date. This means that the coffee is dead and lifeless and you are seeing the results in your cup.

                I would recommend you seek out a local roaster (I think there is a sponsor in Perth who roasts) and get some coffee that is fresh and you will be amazed at the difference. You will have to adjust your grinder settings as fresh coffee is a very different beast but the results will instantly be better.

                You will soon have lots of other questions I am sure but fresh coffee is the number one thing you need to fix right now. Welcome to the journey. 8-)

                  BB does not give any idea of when it was roasted ??

                  Rule of thumb....

                  green R OK 4 3 Yeas

                  Roasted R OK 4 3 Weeks

                  Ground R OK 4 3 Minute
