  • Different smelling coffees

I roasted up some Colombian Huila about 7 hours ago and as I stopped to smell the beans (some prefere roses but what do they know) I was caught by surprise when the unmistakable aroma of fresh from the oven roasted turkey tickled my nose. Both the lighter and the darker roast were emitting this enticing aroma.

The beans were roasted in the Gothot (http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1121040424/165) and brought to 1st crack at the 8 minute mark with the lighter roast being pulled at 10:30 shortly after the skins smoothed out, and the darker roast being pulled at 11:00 just as the first crinkles of 2nd crack sounded.

They were cooled in the BBC (http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1092462710/11#11) to room temp in ~30 seconds and then rested in open topped SS bowls at 67F/19C and 70%RH.

Anybody else had a bean with an unusual or unexpected aroma?

Wierd indeed Lovey. These beans developed the roasted turkey smell somewhere between 4 and 7 hours post roasting. They didnt have it 4 hours after roasting when I smelled them and they did when I next checked them at 7 hours post roast. It will be interesting to see what smell they have when I get up tomorrow.

The update is that 12 hours after roasting the beans still had that fresh roasted turkey smell, however upon waking and smelling them (22 hours after roasting) the darker roast has no trace of the turkey and in the lighter roast theres just a hint of it left. Now to see how they taste as soon as the Cimbali finishes warming up.
