  • Help for CoffeeSnob currently in Philadelphia

    Help from anyone.

Im sitting in a hotel in Philly and have used up the last of my Aussie Coffee.

Does anyone know where I can get some real coffee or a shop that knows how to make one?

Ive got two weeks left and cant even begin to describe the stuff they are trying to palm off as coffee.

    Please help me.

Lots of luck in your search there Dorf!

I spent several days in Philly last year when I moved my kid there. I never did find any decent coffee and was very glad that Id brought along several gallons of my cold process. The lack of good coffee was just one of the things that left me with the attitude that Philly sucked and could kiss my nether region.

I suppose if all else fails I could send you some of my roasts via express mail. I will be doing a big roasting session in the next couple of days here so if you want some let me know.

Re: Help for CoffeeSnob currently in Philadelphia

              Gday Dorf!

Your emergency coffee supply is in the mail and on its way to you. You should be receiving it later today.

I sent you about 170g each of 2 different SOs. Theres a Nicaraguan Angelina Estate that was roasted to the first few snaps of 2nd crack but pulled before the roll started and theres an Ethiopian Harrar Longberry Horse pulled just into the rolling 2nd crack.

I would start off with the Nicaraguan Angelina Estate and let the Ethiopian Harrar Longberry Horse rest for a few days before brewing it up.

The Ethiopian is the one with the wonderful wild blueberry notes that I posted about awhile back (http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1145439804). Ive only done one batch of it before tonight so Ive not got much of a sample to go from but the one batch didnt achieve its full flavor until 5 days post roast. As the beans rest youll get a nice berry smell off of them and then suddenly they will smell overwhelmingly of wild blueberries and will remain at this peak for 2 or maybe 3 days before the massive blueberry smell and flavor starts to fade as quickly as it appeared.

This is of course if the bagging of them less than 2 hours after roasting and then sending them up in a plane for a few hours at altitude doesnt change their resting/taste profile.

I would probably open the bags up once you get them so as to get some fresh air to the beans so they develop properly.

Take a whiff of the Ethiopian at least once a day to see when its reached its peak flavor. Your nose will know when that is. ;D

You may find a bit more chaff than usual in the beans as my BBC (Bean Bucket Cooler http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1092462710/11#14) chose tonight to have its fan die so the beans were cooled in the Gothots (http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1121040424) cooling tray which has nowhere near the air velocity that the BBC does and sucks the air accross the beans through the sieve as oppossed to the BBCs blowing the air through the sieve and then accross the beans, removing all the chaff in the process.

I didnt think to ask if you have a grinder with. Being the coffee snob that you are I assumed youd be grinding your beans fresh and so sent you whole beans. :

              Enjoy!

You should have the beans now. USPS says the package was delivered at 8:34 this (Saturday) morning.

Nope, no parties just a bunch of hard work (and and quick trip to New York).

One week to go to - Silvia will be happy to have me back using her over and over again! I know what she likes.

Unlike Boris I am true to Silvia (for now at least).

WooHoo! Desk pounded on, heads banged, and package found!

You should have it in your hands by now and be enjoying its wonderful aromas!

FYI the Ethiopian Harrar Longberry Horse here is starting to show its blueberry notes. Not at full strength yet though. Maybe another day or two on it.

Amazing what talking to the manager and stating you have proof the package was delivered and that you will expect reimbursement if they cant find it will do! ;D

                            Aroma, beautiful aroma.

Now where did i put my grinder?

Funny how the little things in life (if you can call coffee little) make things seem better.

Thanks to Javaphile I can now enjoy the rest of my stay in the US without discussing the finer points of grinding, tamping and extraction with the barristers @ Starbucks & Dunkin Doughnuts!

I am starting to think that any outlet that doesnt know a doppio ristretto from a latte (something about arseholes and elbows) may not be worth frequenting.

OK call me a coffee snob! Hey thats what I am.
