Practice Coffee

Hope this is the right section to post this. Have stepped up to Bezzera BZ02 from a Breville Ikon and as awesome the machine is, I am getting a little annoyed with coffee wastage as I am using alot to correct and adjust for the new machine.

Kindly asking advice to suggest a cheaper coffee that I can use and wont miss for the sake of practice but enough quality to get the right results.

Going to take some time to get used to correct dosing and tamper pressure and not real happy using Fiefys Latte Art 2011 as practice coffee.

Part of the problem is each coffee really needs a different grind, Di Bella or Veneziano in Brisbane would be worth a go.

Best solution to speed things along is grab a set of accurate 100g scales and weigh your doses for a while. This eliminates one of the variables that is easiet to get wrong while you are playing with grind, concentrate on a level tamp of 10-12kg then you are nearly there

That gives you lots to choose from with the potential for enjoying a decent brew at the end of it. As bean has hinted at, consistency is the name of the game and you need to find the dose that suits your particular machine, then develop a technique that allows you to recognise when the dose is correct - Whether you choose to weigh the beans or measure the volume. Which ever method you choose to use, it just has to be something that you can replicate easily without even thinking about it...

Im personally not a big fan of weighing the beans before grinding but there are plenty of CSers who are and have incorporated this into their technique. I prefer to dose by volume rather than by weight as this then becomes something you can reliably measure by eye without the need for additional hardware and procedures. Keep it simple has always been my motto.... 8-)

You can try Schibello coffee. From the online shop you can get the dolce for $30/kilo. Thats pretty got coffee for that price.

And diBella is pretty good value, too.

Alternately, save a few bucks and roast your own
