Not sure where to put this one. In the turkish coffee thread? or camping? or fire roasting?
I read a book a few years back (Arabian Sands by Wilfred Thesiger) which has great descriptions of coffee making by Bedu in Suadi Arabias Empty quarter back in the late 40s. They would roast the beans over a campfire in a ladle-like thing and then immediately grind them in a mortar and pestle and make coffee in the Arabic style.
The book is good, if you like travellers tales. One englishman travelling with a group of Bedu across the desert. Sometimes they went without food and without much water but they never went without coffee! ;D
Ive tried searching, but the text hasnt made it into the internet except google books and they dont show much of it. So if youre interested you might need to track down a paper copy.
