Trawling for Training Tips

Hi all Coffee Snobs,

First off, I admit this post is to obtain information, Andy ( or any admins), if inappropriate, my appologies and fell free to delete of course.

I am a Barista Trainer and I would like any feedback on what customers/cafe owners etc would ideally like from an independant trainer. What would benefit your business best, or what areas you feel are not trained effectively.

Maybe experiences good or bad you have had, any form of ideas.

I dont mean to sound rude or arrogant (apologies in advance if I offend) but a barista trainer should know this kind of stuff already - posting like this is amateurish.

What would benefit your business best, or what areas you feel are not trained effectively.

This is something to discuss with the client, not an open forum. Every client will have different needs. I can guarantee you that every cafe client I have had has had different needs.

I have to admit that I am with Dave on this one.

As a trainer, a little obervation and discussion should enable you to identify the requirements of your audience and then develop strategies to optimise the outcomes when you deliver the training.

Assuming that you have the coffee experience and the required qualifications to deliver training- and many dont, these skills should be innate.

Whenever I seek professional advise I like a person who listens to my needs / wants before advising / working with me how to solve the issue / situation.

Not someone who just tells me how to do it without explaining why or listening etc.

A follow up visit to onsite clients built into the training program a few weeks / month later I reckon would also be a positive. Kind of like the Gordan Ramsey kitchen nightmares follow up visit to see if old habits have returned...

continuous improvement is important anywhere not only for your business but theirs as well

Appology accepted for your arrogant and condescending reply to my post. Thanks goodness you have set me straight, god forbid I should be considered an amateur (yes, heavily sarcastic  ).

Here is a business tip for you, always have an open mind in regards to gathering information, as information is power. Making the mistake that you know everything already, is usually a flaw of the ego, and will hinder your fledgling business. You can have that one for free.

Chris, I do understand this and impliment this process myself. I was not asking how to gather information from a client, or unsurity of how to decipher my clients needs during consultation, I was asking for information generally from CS members. I feel the point may have been misunderstood. :-?

Someone that builds good relationships and can communicate effectively with a wide range of people without resorting to sarcasm would be welcome

I never asked for your advice, so you can keep it  . I never said I knew everything. In fact I agree wholeheartedly with you on the point of gathering information and open mindedness - call it learning if you will - the day I stop learning is the day I fall behind. Because I recognise this I still attend coffee classes (just not the barista type) for professional development including one recently with Tim Wendelboe (2004 World Barista Champion).

You missed my point. Yes this is a forum. Discussion of what "on what customers/cafe owners etc would ideally like from an independant trainer" is something you discuss with your clients and deliver the material accordingly.

As would some respect for fellow forum members.
