  • How soon can you grind freshly roasted coffee?

    Hi,
have a little delemma, I have some friends who love my fresh roasted coffee but require it ground (Dont judge them please, I am working on them ).
My question is how soon can I grind it after roasting?
Eg: It it Ok to grind Hour old coffee, bag it and drink it in a few days?
I usually leave my beans a week before use so does that cross over at all?
    Hope someone can help, Thanks

    Liam

Id get them to buy a Kyocera, then they dont have to worry about you grinding it and using it within a few days, theyll be able to get the full pleasure of fresh roasted and rested beans ;D

Grind it straight away, put it in an air tight zip lock bag, tell them to store it in the freezer.

      Better yet, get a grinder.

I remember this topic being discussed previously. From what I can remember the consensus was that grinding the coffee will speed up the degassing process so may as well be done sooner rather than later post-roast.

I would put into coffee bags with one way valves, as per normal and store at room temperature.

Hopefully your friends will realise how much better it is freshly ground and buy a grinder for themselves.

I agree with this. I dont think your Mazzer is really designed to grind 250 grams in one go. From my very vague memory it should only be run for 20 seconds on then 30 off or something similar.

When someone that knows for sure corrects me Ill edit my post so I appear smarter ;D

              Thanks trentski,

Id hate to do in my mazzer for the sake of some pre-ground coffee.

Anyone know what the recommendations are?

asking Google the manual I found suggested 30 minutes and it then needs a rest too cool down.

I asked google and found this image

supposedly for a mazzer mini, I also found that the super jolly had a 40 second on 40 second off cycle, so 30 minutes seems way way off

Doesnt sound right to me either.

Might be for a Deli/Bag grinder version, if theres such a thing.... :-?

Moisture is the enemy, dont be leaving your frozen grinds on the bench to condensate.

But it will slow down the degradation and staling process. Imo considering this is considerably sped up by pre grinding it is imho a good trade.

There are indeed deli bag grinder versions of both the Super Jolly and the Major known as the "For Grocery" models. Dont know about them being able to cope with 30 mins of non-stop grinding though. Shouldnt be an issue as either one of these can power through 1kg in a couple of minutes.
