  • Is there a trend to smaller espressos

Hi - Ive noticed recently that some establishments are serving very small espressos - ie less than 15ml, maybe 10ml. Mecca espresso is an example. Is this a new trend? What is the aim - the coffees have been very good, just very short. Just wondering if Im missing something here.

it sounds like they are serving you a ristretto....about 15ml over 15-20 seconds. Achieved by either finer grind or overpacking the basket slightly. Should be natually a sweet coffee

Hi melbuurn - yeah i initially thought ristretto - maybe by mistake, because definitely asked for short black. The small volume is normal for mecca where Ive been a number of times - just wondering why

        Hi argon,

probably best to ask them yourself,
might be good reason, or not.
You will get a good idea by how they handle the question and the answer you get.

An new trend in NSW maybe but Melbourne cafes have been doing that for a long time. Its my pet hate when Ive ordered an espresso.

Pulling that short gives higher body and sugars, lower acidity and bitterness and will hide a lot of faults in a blend and ergo, more chance the punter will like it but if you were looking for an espresso to try the coffee then its lost in that tight a shot.

David Seng at Veneziano is one of the few that will give me what I ordered everytime. I like that!

that shot he brought out for you did look pretty good andy at pickup day

might actually have to pop inside next time I get beans, rather than be outside in the cold
