Re: McDonalds Customers Brew Up a Stink...

MacDonalds are concerned about their coffee

I wonder when they will be able to make an edible burger?  :-/

        mass market but what quality??????

Clearly it is a successful business model but does AA+ grade coffee fit in with ??? grade food?

do people want strong coffee or nice coffee?

          Both actually!

As has been noted earlier - until they get a machine capable of a decent shot, even a world champion would pour an overheated pot of dregs. Surely they should be able to raise their game to Starbucks level - how difficult could that be!

My local Brumbys can pour a passable cuppa with a foetus driving the machine...

The article makes no mention of nice coffee.

Strong coffee can be of variable quality.

The journey can be long if you are heading in the wrong direction.

I am happy to remain blissfully ignorant on what they do to their coffee

Going to the theatre tonight with friends, who stated the intention to get a coffee after the show at - wait for it - Maccas. One of the drawbacks of living in a country city is that there are NO cafes open on a Saturday night. I checked around a couple of bars this morning to see if they were open for coffee and maybe a port around 10.30pm but got the answer "depends on business". No option but to be anti-social I guess and go straight home after the show.

Even McDs will give you a free glass of water so you can sit with them and not appear anti social (mind you, you got to ask for it, or theyll try to charge you for the bottled water).

Macas might not have nice food or coffee but they do have great water.

since the restaurants use big superautos for takeaway coffee, and the mccafe machines seem to be exactly the same except they steam the milk manually, there doesnt seem to be much for the "barista" to do.  IMO even IF they can find good baristi theyll need to ditch those machines and get something better...
or do those Cafina autos have enough adjustment that a good coffee can be had from them??  Id be surprised, but should I give them the benefit of the doubt?
A lot of the McCafes use proper espresso machines rather than superautomatics - usually Rancilio Classe 10s and Rancilio MD-80 grinders (in Melbourne at least, not sure if that applies elsewhere in Australia). The quality of the coffee often seems to be related to the enthusiasm of the franchisee in getting it right - some of the McDs we have serviced equipment at are terrible at coffee, some are actually quite good, and the latter are sites where the operator puts some effort into getting the equipment set up right and training the staff well. I think some sites will rotate staff through various different roles including stints as a barista, whereas the better managed ones will try to hire people with some coffee making skill and keep them behind the machine rather than moving them around through other jobs in the restaraunt.

Although i have a suspicion that some of the quality problems with McDs coffeee stems from the company they use to supply and maintain most of their espresso equipment - we get jobs passed onto us by them that they dont want (or cant do successfully) and see the results of some of their expertise.

Great post MorganGT! I cant help but think that even if the machines are set up and the staff trained the supply of beans would be their shortfall. I recently was forced to drink Maccas coffee after a recital in the Blue Mountains (really early start following morning in r to drive back to the airport). I was close enough to the Grinder when the girl was topping up the hopper and the overwhelming smell of stale made me regret my order before even tasting it. Are the better franchisees able to source a better fresher product or are their efforts stymied by a flawed supply chain? This would be their greatest challenge ad I see it.
