    Hmmm...

Canstar Blue surveyed 2500 Australian consumers over a number of months, and the results of the survey were taken from customers who have visited a coffee chain in the last six months.
Thats the "gotcha" right there. If the prerequisite was "been to a real cafe with fresh beans" then the results might have been different.
    ;D

At least some McDonalds stores are making a concerted effort to improve the standard of their coffee. One franchisee we do service work for has just had us install a new La Marzocco Linea and Mazzer Major at one of his 3 stores, replacing Rancilio equipment. The Rancilio Classe 10 that came out of that store is to be fully refurbished and installed with another Major at a second location, then the Classe 10 that will be taken out of that store will be refurbed to replace the Franke super-auto machine at his third location, where customers (rightly) complain about the standard of coffee that the machine is able to produce.

    Source a good bean blend.
Thatd require sacrificing a fraction of the almighty bottom line, which isnt going to happen anytime soon.

I cant say I have ever had a decent coffee from Mcdonalds but then again I dont expect to.

If I want a cheeseburger I go to Mcdonalds, If I want good coffee I go to Fiefys .

I am happy to remain blissfully ignorant on what they do to their coffee
^^ THIS is what Maccas always get wrong.
    Remember the "real chicken" campaign?

The best way Maccas can improve is by allowing me the dignity of being able to make socially acceptable comments while drunk on a Friday night at 4am about how good it was to finally have a coffee.
But no, its like they want to be known as the worst fast food chain ever known to mankind.

Maccas train their kitchen staff to be consistent. Every cheese burger, every big mac tastes the same. They basically measure out the components. Why cant they translate this into the cafe?
Get equipment thats simple to use, and helpful. Stuff like those tampers that have a 30lb spring loading.
Source a good bean blend. Train the staff properly and teach them the ins and outs of what different orders are (even have recipe guides so you can look up what goes into a long black)
Get the grinder set up to dose correctly and all the kid has to do is learn how to steam milk.
auto dose, standard tamp pressure, good quality machine with a timed/callibrated shot infusion.

If you standardise as many of the variables as possible, it becomes less of a knack/skill and more of an assembly thing.

Also if you have kids who only work the cafe they will develop skill over time. Making 200 lattes a day compared to 10 lattes and 190 burgers. Set it up as their own separate environment and soon enough there will be a coffee snobbery among the saff where the cafe workers are a "better class" than the burger flippers. When I was a kid, it was a right of passage to work drive through.. Its interesting how work culture can develop

Ari makes a good point. There is a new outfit in my neck of the woods called Sexi Coffie and it has been interesting to watch them develop from the new kid on the block with a lot of enthusiasm but some quality issues, to probably the best coffee in the region. The key element is unquestionably enthusiasm and passion. Right from the start the baristas exuded a committment to what they were doing, and it showed in the steadily increasing quality of their coffee. They still have occasional lapses and I try to compliment their outstanding cups and provide constructive comment on the less than successful ones. It is clear however, that their passion is being fed from whoever owns the shop. My point is that the moment the owner stops pushing the staff to better results the place will be in danger of taking a dive. Quality is always led from the top. When management dont care - staff dont care. Maccas will have to be fair dinkum about it.

It all comes back to the fact that no self-respecting Barista would want to work at Maccas unless the outfit is genuinely serious about producing high quality coffee.  I cant see why Maccas would want to get into high quality coffee - it would be inconsistent with their market niche and their strengths which is providing garbage for the undiscriminating masses.  Im betting their traditional customers would not like (or recognise) good coffee.  Good Baristas take a pride in their work and also usually in the place where they work.  I dont think you could ever tell people with pride that you were a Barista at Maccas.
    Agreed... and very good post.

I do feel, however, that McDonalds CAN make a good cup of coffee, but basically choose not to. There are a number of McCafes in Melbourne which are rather trendy. The Cafe part is off to the side and not in the same preparation area as cheeseburgers n fries. Its almost like another outlet in a food court.

Should that McCafe have the right equipment and offer the right beans then I can see a decent barista willing to work there, particularly if they are running their own show. As in, there is no superviser behind the counter with them there.

Where it falls down is in the customer. The clientele of a McDonalds is not a fussy person, they cant be. A true barista loves what they do and drives off the appreciation of their customer. I cant imagine too many Maccas customers smiling as they drink or thanking the barista on the way out for a fantastic coffee. This is where it falls over. A true baristra should have an ego which needs to be fed.

Today Tonight is just showing a piece about how apologising is the latest corporate marketing tool.

You mean they are running an advertisement :

You now get a replacement if you dont "love" your mcDs coffee.
So they will offer you another cup of coffee that youve just advised them you didnt like. Did I miss something there? Is their bad cup of coffee going to miraculously turn good? Or do they feel that you will lower your expectations for the second cup? ooh ooh, maybe you will consider that two bad coffees for the price of one makes it a good deal?

    What a joke.

If they serve me a bad cup of coffee, the LAST thing I could possibly want is another bad cup of coffee!!!!!!

It is a long time since I have had a coffee under the golden arches.

Years ago I got one there that was far too hot to drink. I added some water to be able to drink it without burning.

Soon after that someone got a coffee at a drive through takeaway, burnt themselves when it spilt in their lap and successfully sued Maccas for damages.

It was said at the time that Maccas had free refills for coffee and that by having very hot coffee it reduced the amount of coffee that people would drink. This policy may have changed since then.

Less than 30 mins ago I had a customer tell me that he had been to GJs where he was told by one of the staff that the difference between a latte and flat white is that, and I quote, "A latte is fluffier, so this makes it stronger than the flat white".

    How ridicuous!!!

You are not the first to note this Leigh. Others on CS also work for Gloria Jeans, Starbucks or other larger cafe chains. These companies also cop their fair share of flak but I agree that those that try to improve their standards should be applauded

However, on one hand, a site that calls itself as "CoffeeSnobs" could have its name called into question if it doesnt adopt highbrow standards.

On the other hand, you are right and I would say it is quite possible to walk into some McDonalds outlets and get served a palatable cup of coffee (but probably not all McDs). I, for one, am not interested in conducting such a trial.

Most, if not all, CS members would have at one time quite happily sipped on brews that might prompt others to race to the tap to rinse out their mouth.

Im not sure why, but I am finding this topic rather irritating....

I see McDonalds for what it is... A hamburger place that caters to kids... They needed to throw in some coffee to keep the mums happy whilst their kids tore it up in the playground....

Kudos to McDonalds for recognising they need shape up...

IMO whilst I would not anticipate any professional Barista raising their hand to actually work there, I see McDonalds as a great stepping stone for anyone wanting to gain employment.. Have a look at the age bracket of its employees... A rough guess 15 - 20 year olds, who really have no care about anything other than what to spend their pay packet on... They are getting through school/uni and just trying to earn a wage... To me, that deserves a little credit..

Im bothered that McDonalds is so openly slammed (and trust me, Im not fan of McDonalds), why is it ok to openly do this to McDonalds, but yet only a few weeks ago someone on here dare say an ill word about a coffee company was shot down in flames for bagging out a company on an open forum..... Thats a little bit hypocritical dont you think??

My opinion is, that this was a fantastic marketing ploy by McDonalds... And it got everyone talking about it.... Cant ask for better publicity than that really...

    *steps off soap box* 8-)
