Interesting trivia.
All I can say is the nature of research is such that often you dont know if you are chasing trivia or the cure for cancer until you have the answer.

Re: Scientists Crack The Physics Of Coffee Rings
Hi all
Whats wrong with public funding to work out a well known problem that may have "implications on the development of inks and paints." You would not have had ink jet printers without scientists studying surface tension, piezoelectricity, acoustic waves and Rayleigh instability. The physicists in the article didnt need good coffee to work out whether their idea might have been right or wrong - they just needed coffee that made a coffee ring. Maybe they were such coffee snobs that they wouldnt dare to use good coffee in their experiments but would sacrifice vending machine coffee :-)

You are kidding right?Originally posted by 3323352D222127400 link=1314158033/1#1 date=1314159369The sad thing is that most of this kind of research is done with public funding. Like the research into bat droppings and the shape of the hammer head...

35 cents????"We went down to the building coffee machine, put 35 cents in, got a cup of coffee, went back upstairs to the microscope, put it on a slide, took a look, and, at least on the micron scale, the particles that we saw were spherical in shape,"
