  • Trouble extracting single shot

    Hi guys,

Im relatively new to coffee making at home and have had the sunbeam em6910 for about 3 months with the sunbeam em040 grinder. Im finding when I use the double shot basket I get a good extraction and the coffee sounds great. With the single shot basket using the same grind settings and coffee the machine really struggles to extract and it never tastes as creamy or nice.
Is it common to have to grind at different settings if you are using a double or single.
Just after some advise or feedback if anyone else has had similar experience and how they solved it.
I threw about 5 shots down the sink today trying to find the perfect single shot grind

Gday Gav and welcome to CoffeeSnobs!

Most in the business simply throw the single in the bin

You are correct that you will either need to dose or grind differently to obtain a satisfactory shot from a single...

I think the last time I used one would be at least 10 years ago...

Do yourself a favour and dont bother. If you really want a single, put your cup under only one spout of the double.

The only thing I ever achieved in trying to perfect my single shot, was screwing up the settings for my double!

        Quoted for truth.

Throw it out, and enjoy what follows.

Ha ha. I was thinking that but thought it is a bit of a waste of coffee.
I will use the double in future.
I think I read somewhere ghat the middle part of the extraction is the best. Should I use the double and let the start fall to the drip tray

Keep the start of the extraction mate, that is the best bit.

Do a double ristretto instead, get the first 30-40ml of the double shot.

The start of the shot has the most total dissolved coffee solids, which means proportionately, it has the most of the good bits. The dissolved coffee solids gradually lessens the longer the shot is run. So by that reasoning, the final stages of the extraction is the bit you dont want to use. That being said, the tail contains solids that many deem necessary, so dont necessarily pull ristrettos just because theyre theoretically more intense - you might find certain coffees suit your tastebuds more when extracted completely. Just experiment, figuring out things will be much more fun!

Personally I use different amounts of a shot, depending on what sort of coffee Im having.
