  • What is higher on your priority list, service or the coffee?

For me its the service. Sure I only get a 6-7/10 coffee and I prefer another coffee shops cappuccino or latte better but the one I got to in Bowral has excellent service. The Mezza Bar opens at 5:30am which is great for me since I get the 6am train to Sydney during the week, I get a discount, which is a $3.50 double shot large latte and everyone there is very friendly and gets to know you on a first name basis. You also get served quickly, if you wait longer than say 10 minutes then you get it for free (although this is more for drink in store than takeaway). Occasionally youll also get something to eat with it too, like banana bread.

What are other peoples opinions on the service vs coffee quality?

I measure them in equal amounts.

If the coffee is overpriced rubbish, but the service is good I still refuse to go back to that location.

Same if the coffee is brilliant, but the service is crap.

Most places Ive found however, Crap Coffee goes hand in hand with Crap Service, and I wonder why the hell people go to these places?

I too sit on the fence with this one...

      Good service - Very important!
      Good coffee - Very important!

I believe that if both of these arnt of a high/exceptable standard that the person who was not happy with the service will tell more people not to go there than someone who was happy with the serivce. As they will tell others people however someone who is unhappy will tend to tell more people they were unhappy with the coffee/service.

Depends on the level of coffee quality we are talking about. I have a place near my home with fantastic atmosphere (inside and out), very pleasant (and busy) staff, but the coffee is just above average. The reason for this (to my thinking) is largely the beans they use. This place does take trouble to train their baristas and they clean meticulously. While Id prefer truly fresh beans, as a whole package this cafe/bistro is pretty good. Now, if the coffee quality is regularly crap because the staff burn the milk, cant use the machine, generally dont give a crap etc, well.....that puts me off a bit, and Ill get my coffee elsewhere.

          Hello All,
For me the coffee is about 90% of it. However, good service/ambience/atmosphere are all a symbiotic part of the cafe experience and are also quite important as well. At the end of the day its all about the coffee.

However, as most of us here seem to like to make our own espresso at home to a better and more exacting quality than most cafes do the main reason that we would seem to patronise many of these establishments is for the atmosphere and interaction with our outside environment.

10 chapters later........ They are both improtant but the coffee wins out for me absolutely.

For me out of 100%. I would have to say 40/60, 40-Service, 60-Coffee.

But as mentioned above, if the service is no good there is no passion or drive, which flows into the coffee (no pun).

If the staff are excited and passionate about what they do, then same again, flows into the coffee.

Ill be upfront by saying that Im not a people person. To be honest, I find most of them boring.

I do like coffee, and I find that things I like are more enjoyable when there is someone there who also likes it, and is also reasonably knowledgeable about it.

Good service to me is simply knowing the answers to my questions [whats the special today? where are your beans from? that kind of thing], smiling politely, and looking like you are enjoying what you do. If I like you, I can over look the quality (to a degree) because I know that youll be disappointed that I didnt love it, and youll try to make sure that next time it will be better.

If you make great coffee, you still need to be reasonably happy with working there, unless you have some eccentricity that makes you interesting (like the Soup Knottsie from Sienfeld).

The quality of the coffee is number one, Ill continue to go back to the cafe if the service remains above a certain standard. If the service is poor, no matter how good the coffee is, Ill go elsewhere.
Used to go to Gills Diner in Melbourne a few times a week as I lived nearby. They had a beautiful lever espresso machine which put out great coffee. Had two terrible experiances in a row and have never been back! (Which in hindsight was great because it meant I spent more time at Brother Baba Budan, that opened my eyes to single origin cofee etc, so thanks Gills for pissing me off ;D)

I couldnt give a rats about the service or the atmosphere. The coffee is everything. If the coffees great they can treat me like a leper (as long as I get exactly what I ordered & its hot)
My regular has nil atmosphere and you can hardly hear yourself think. The service is very good but I would still go there even if it was rubbish because the coffee is always great.

Preferably both, but if I had to choose one itd be the coffee.

Im yet to go to a place that serves great coffee with poor service. But Ive been to plenty of places that serve criminally bad coffee with service to match.
