  • Bean Recomendations (Noob)

    Hi All

My bezzera is due on Friday, and I should have it plumbed in and hissing by the weekend, so I need to find something to put in it.

Im new to the decent coffee making business, and wondered if snobs had any particular recommendations for Beginners Beans!?

Looking through the beanbay, either the sample or gift packs look like they might be a good place to start? Ill get some of the decaff as well as those beans seem to get good reviews, and a bedtime coffee would be nice!

Does anyone have any particular advice for me - I currently probably have a pretty unrefined palate, but that will change...

Ive never ground my own beans before, so all of this is a big first, which Im looking forward to  ;D

You are the only judge of your tastes. But, you will also be learning a machine, assuming you are new to the whole espresso preparation thing. So, a coffee that doesnt taste so good may be to do with technique rather than bean quality.
The sensible course of action would be, while you are learning your machine, to stick with one bean type and learn to make good coffee using only it for the next month.
The Peru Ceja de Selva Estate from Beanbay is not a bad start.

Hard to go past Espresso WOW for something that drinks well as both an espresso and in milk coffees.

Good plan. One bean type - check.

And maybe a silly question... :-[ ... approx how many cups of coffee does a kilo of beans make? Assuming single shots for simplicity.

Depends on your dose size. On an average of 10g (is this reasonable for a single??) including waste. Youd get 100 shots...

Single what is this single you speak of. Drink doubles and consign your single basket to the bottom drawer ;D

With a little wastage and without up dosing to much 50-55 doubles to the kg is fairly normal. At home using the K10 I am only getting around 40 due to purging stale grinds between shots. With single baskets some vary from 7-10g but I have never liked using them and the results in the cup from doubles I prefer.

For beans it depends a lot on you but also what sort of coffees you want to drink espressos, LBs or milk base? Not all beans or blends work for all drinks. I generally find blends aimed at Espresso can be a little muted in milk based drinks for example.

Try lots of variety and drink it different ways to start figuring out what you like. Expect to waste 2-300g initially getting your grind/dose etc somewhere near it initially too.

            Good luck

Ah just wait until they find out how long it takes to make a coffee.

At least half an hour to properly heat the machine then the dance of heat cups, and portFilter, grind, tamp pre flush if needed pull shot steam milk clean up, rinse pf back flush, sweep up loose grounds and wipe down bench.....

Mmmmmm maybe Ive just scared you away from espresso. I hope not because it is so worth it

I like to think of it as similar to sex, hard work leading up to the act makes the actual event sooo much worth while.
