  • Milk - full cream or skim

    Hi. With the colder weather coming on, more warm drinks (read coffee) are required. However, for those of us who are "people with an alternative body image" or "METABOLIC UNDERACHIEVERS", the problem is full cream milk. Too much past the lips and it ends up on the hips. :-[

    So I have tried a couple of shots with skim milk. I have found that the type of milk used makes no real difference to the flavour of the end product. The coffee taste still shines through. So I think I will stick with it and hopefully keep the kilos off during the cold winter months.

    Does anyone else have an opinion?

    Ive settled on a 50/50 mix between full cream and lite.

    Full cream on its own seems too heavy and gluggy whilst I liked the lite stuff for froffy(?) capuccinos, for microfoamed lattes its a bit too fluffy and lacking in substance to hold the coffee flavour.

    gives my fmaily something else to laugh about, me blending milk!

      Next Time you get a Chance see what type of Milk the Cafes use...... The ones up here use Leaded and Un-leaded milks but a few use a special cappucino milk.... I think it is allowed to Age for a day or two.... But I am not sure.

      I would love to learn how to Froth milk properly, but untill then I will use my Frothy Thing on the side of my Saeko....... Gooooooood Frothy Thing!..... Wife thinks this man has a problem!!!!................ Shes right.

        I notice a difference. I dont like skinny milk and i fugure full cream has stuff all fat in it any way and it is then diluted even further with the espresso. so why bother?? ;D

          Low fat expresso...  ;D
          No cow fat, just fresh vegtable oil from the bean... hey... you could think of expresso as vegan or diet food.

          ...except I also like to drink Big Ms so there goes any benefit of dropping the little splash of milk in my coffee.

            Has anyone tried using non-homogenised milk for steaming? I have been buying some great local milk and this weekend I think Ill try pouring off the cream and steaming the skim because unlike most skim milks this one seems to retain a lot of body and flavour.

            Is this common to non-homogenised milks?

              Ive just started buying organic, unhomogenised milk, and Im delighted at the smooth microfoam Ive been able to create with it. I dont know if its due to it being unhomogenised, or organic, but Im going to stick with it and keep the Dairy Farmers for cereal and tea!

                Ive mostly used lite milk that is a blend of skim milk and skim milk powder, (not a watered down full cream milk) and find that I can get nice microfoam, and nice lattes.

                Also prefer the small size drink, closer to 170ml for my lattes....

                  i always have full cream, dont really like the skim and if you saw me you would probably recommend the full cream anyway.
