Hi All,
Firstly, I better point out that I am not an experienced "taster" of coffee and as such will not succumb to the temptation of using adjectives that I often see repeated on other websites but dont necessarily understand or feel able to qualify.
That being said, I will put forth my first impressions of the above beans recently received:-
Roast -
These green beans certainly make their presence felt as soon as the bag is opened... A wonderful rich complexity hits the nostrils almost immediately and theyre not even roasted yet!
They can certainly take on a very dark roast without ill effects. I currently use a couple of poppers to roast with, with most roasts completed at approx. 8 1/2-9 minutes. With these beans though, at this stage of the roast 2nd crack hadnt even started.
2nd crack actually started at around 10 minutes and the roast was stopped after a rolling 2nd crack just commenced at about 10 1/2 minutes. The ensuing aroma was absolutely fantastic.
Beans were allowed to rest for 48 Hrs before brewing and this wait was a most difficult task I can assure you.
Taste and Aroma -
The aroma while grinding was one of the most intense I have experienced from a Columbian and was reminiscent of recently ground cocoa with a very prominent spice laden pungency.
After brewing with the Mokita, this aroma was still present but in much more intense form. This translated into an initial flavour that absolutely filled the mouth with a smooth, molten dark chocolate feel, that transformed slowly into a clean very pure coffee flavour that lingered on for more than an hour.
It is now my intention to use this bean as the basis for a number of simple blends that I enjoy and will report back on those at a later date.
Absolutely great bean, would recommend to anyone seeking something with a bit more oomph than the typical quality Brazilian Santos that one would generally use as the base bean. Cant wait for my next cuppa. All the best,
Mal.
