Re: Where to buy coffee beans in Melbourne?

Hey Andrew , I also use a pavoni pro and have been getting my beans from Gigante in Charman road Cheltenham .They roast a number of different blends but I tend to stick with the one they use in the shop -Mochachino-as you can be sure its always fresh . Often when I do my weekly [250 gr.] run the roaster is doing his thing behind the counter . While I dont think of myself as a true coffee snob or coffee geek I rekon I get a pretty good espresso out of these beans . I know its on the other side of town to you but if you are ever over this way you may want to try something else .
    Regards Brendan

Im sure youve got enough info with all the previous replies, but heres my 2c. Ive only tried Alan Frew from Coffee for Connoisseurs www.coffeeco.com.au in Port Melbourne but have always been happy with the results, both freshness and variety. This may be a better option for those outside the Melbourne CBD as its predominantly mail-order (hence my custom from Adelaide).

    Hi Luca and all,

I bought some beans at atomica, and some more from Jaspers.. The atomica dark roast blend is absolutely fantastic, so full and intensely flavoured! I also bought more of the okapa png bean from Jaspers, which I really like.

Is there a trick to getting the freshest roast from atomica?
Cool, glad you like it! The Dark Roast is great for milk-based drinks, but its challenging to make it taste really good as an espresso - it needs a relatively fast pour (not as in gushing, just better to avoid ristrettos), cut off early and the temperature needs to be relatively low; then its nice and chocolatey with a bit of sweetness. You can go higher in temperature and get heaps of sweetness out of it, but you also get a very acrid flavour; quite unbalanced. Best to use it as a base for milk drinks, IMHO. I, too, tend to save espresso for good cafes rather than home!

Atomica are usually pretty good at getting fresh roast to people ... but admittedly I havent bought from them for a while. The bags that are on the shelves are usually about four days old, but its best to ask just to be sure. As poundy said, the dark roast will oil up relatively quickly. This also means that Atomica Dark hits its peak earlier than other blends ... its probably best at 3 to 7 or 8 days out of the roaster, which means that it has to be fresh!

    Hope that helps,

    Luca

Dont think espresso is the nirvana that everyone aspires to - I drank many a espresso when I first got Giotto, and whileI enjoyed it, I found I continued to enjoy the milk based drinks, so just kept that up. So tehres at least two of us who prefer to help the dairy industry !
    Make that 3! ;D

    Java "Uuuummmm....Milk!" phile

The second place that I keep on ending up at is Veneziano Cafe (www.venezianocoffee.com.au), who are a much larger commercial roasting concern, but always maintain freshness.

    Cheers,

    Luca
    And by happy coincidence,

Veneziano also happen to be one of our respected Site Sponsors and definitely worth a try ,

Dont knock the milkies, mmm latte. Ill throw my hat in the ring and recommend The Coffee Co. in Carlisle St East St Kilda. They have new owners as of last week, but Ross the manager (I think) has been there for a few years and is very knowledgable and happy to spend a bit of time with you to give advice on any coffee related matter. They carry alot of stock, but have a big turnover, so freshness is not an issue.

Poundy: so it is fresh - nice! The dark roast just blew me away - it comes through the milk so loud and clear!! Yes, I know, I should have it without milk.. Im weaning myself off it..

Rich and Rae I will try the light roast and aotearoa blend next, in that order.

A "dark roast" is something youd usually expect to see more oil become evident on the beans quicker than a more "conservative" roast. So I dont think you could use that as a true indication of the freshness.

I have to say, that I think the Jaspers bean was this weekend fresher looking than atomicas dark roast bean. The atomica had a slightly oily quality to them, while Jaspers was very dry. Am I right to say that?

you could also try Chosen Bean in the Mountain Gate shops - corner of FTG rd and Burwood Hwy. Its co-owned by Justin Metcalfe.

Why limit yourself to Melbourne?? :P

I dont live near a major city where coffee roasters are a dime a dozen! (no offence intended guys!) And I generally get my coffee mail order. Express post is wonderful and if the roaster has done his/her job and been good enough to send me their freshly roasted beans, I am no worse off than if I lived in the city.

Sure theres nothing like being able to walk on in to your fave roaster and smell those wonderful smells, see those wonderful coffee beans being handled with loving care but that is a luxury I dont have living in the bush, so we make do.

Craig has an extremely good palate and one of the most honest guys i have met. They are based in Balwyn i think. I havent tried the coffee yet, but he is working extremely hard on the blends. He was my first coffee teacher.

Grinders (where I bought it) gave me a free bag to experiment with, which was nice. They say they roast their beans on site, so hopefully they are okay, as lygon st is very easy to get to for me too.
Grinders are owned by Coca Cola Amatil! Ive got to give it to them; theyre very, very good at marketing, branding, etc.

aspers & Atomica are right across the road from each other, you could try buying the "same" coffee from both and doing your own comparison.
Great idea! Like I always say, at the end of the day, its whats in the cup that counts!

On the original topic, are there any roasters in Melbourne in the Eastern suburbs? (my daily route is Burwood to Mulgrave, so not too far out!)
    Veneziano are in abbotsford.

    Cheers,

    Luca
