  • What barista course??

I understand the rules on giving non-sponsors a free plug, but can anyone suggest where or who runs a good barista course in Melbourne or Sydney. I am in Tas and as nothing is offered down here, will have to travel. I currently know nothing, but want to know everything (within reason), except latte art. Serving coffee is going to become a small, but intergral part of my retail business, and I want to get it right. It is so confusing. Some coffee wholesalers offer free courses to their customers, some coffee courses are only $50 per module, and some courses are pushing $1000. Im not afraid to spend the money, but how do I know which course? Do we assume that a $1000 course is a thousand times better, or a thousand times more comprehensive than a free course? But surely the coffee wholesaler wants their coffee served properly, so maybe a free course is just as good? Maybe I dont want to commit to a particular brand in order to access a free course. Any suggestions?

      Cameron, welcome to coffee snobs.

You should check out the posts in this sequence, talking about the Wiliam Angliss courses that Chris is involved with, but also talks about some NSW options if thats of any benefit.

      My personal view:
Dont lock yourself in to a coffee supplier just yet, like you said. Get sessions like the understanding & mastering espresso plus prepare and serve espresso coffee under your belt (heres an example http://www.sydneycoffeeacademy.com.au/Course_Info.htm#ProfessionalBaristaTraining) I think those two will put you in good stead, but wont be the be-all and end-all, youll still need to leverage off your machine and coffee supplier/s to build the full skills you need to do it well.

Chris *is* the go-to guy for all this, Im sure he could deliver the exact session you need.

good luck, make sure you let us know how you go.

I blame Chris too!!!! I did two of his courses a couple of years ago and am still raving about it to anyone wholl listen. He knows alot of stuff and is very good at teaching it. Everyone who visits my place is still benefitting from his teachings.
