Re: Monsooned Malabar??
I bought a bag of this on the reccomendation fo a friend. I was amazed at how dry it was. When roasting it comes into first crack like an explosion, I would turn the gas off completely and it would get to second crack with no additional heat, just the residual heat in the drum. I wasnt overly impressed with this as a SO, but it does oil up quicker than other coffees and adds a little sweetness when peppered through a blend.

Re: Monsooned Malabar??
From the Indian Coffee board...
http://www.indiacoffee.org/newsletter/2006/april/cover-story-2.html
In his books, Kenneth Davids mentions Coelhos Gold as one of the superior brands. Their website is a bit long winded about the whole monsooning shebang.
http://www.coelhosgold.com/processorg1.htm
OTOH, Davids description of monsooned coffee is one of the snappiest around:-
Monsooned Coffee, Monsooned Malabar. Dry-processed single-origin coffee from south India deliberately exposed to monsoon winds in open warehouses, with the aim of increasing body and reducing acidity
Josuma Coffee has a link to a great article from Fresh Cup magazine about Indian Coffee, not much about monsooning. Joseph Johns would been one of the first monsoon pimps in the US speciality coffee market??

Re: Monsooned Malabar??
Lucinda,
Theres quite a lot of things written about the origins of this type of bean (or rather the monsoon process relating to coffee).
This is a short article that explains in briefly.

Re: Monsooned Malabar??
I really hope that the monsooned malabar comes back on the bean bay before I run out of the 2.5kg I bought. I have a plan though - buy as much as I can off the next few bean bays to boost my stash, thereby making the malabar less important while I trial and mess about with the new beans and different blends. Now if I can just find someone to pick up the beans in Sydney for me and bring them up, I can buy more coffee since I dont have to pay postage...

Re: Monsooned Malabar??
Hi Belinda,Originally posted by Corretto link=1160576093/0#13 date=1163380201Twas Indian Monsoon Malabar AA from the last Beanbay there Mal
Yes, I knew the variety we recently had available.... I bought 5Kgs ;D. Should probably have bought 10 Kgs its that good, never mind. I guess I thought that the MM we had was THE one that everyone refers to and writes about as I wasnt aware that there were other varietals around... know about the various grades of this one though.
Mal.
Edit:
Thanks Andy, didnt see your post while reading through the previous page.

Re: Monsooned Malabar??
Woops sorry Mal, it was a little ambiguous. Yes the previous November BeanBay Monsooned bean was the Monsooned Malabar AA which so much has been written.Originally posted by Mal link=1160576093/0#12 date=1163346812Is the Malabar from the last BeanBay THE Monsooned Malabar about which so much has been written Andy? I wasnt aware that there were several varietals that used the same tag....Originally posted by Andy Freeman link=1160576093/0#7 date=1163306138You wont see that particular Malabar in the next BeanBay but we will have a shot at more monsooned beans as they arrive in the country and if they are good then yes, they will be offered-up too.
Mal.
I was also refering to other monsooned coffees that we have (and will) sample from India...
Think of "monsooned" as a process not a brand name.
Prior to the Nov BeanBay I tried 3 different "Monsooned Malabar AA" coffees, all were different and of course, that one was the best.
WOW, that is a big call El Espressio, glad it works well for you.In fact, mad as it may seem to some, Id happily drink this and nothing else forever.
It really is a polarising bean, it seems that most of the posters in this thread are in the "love camp" but I could find just as many that dont like it and cannot see the attraction to monsooned beans.
"gotta love choice!"
A.

In my "most humble" opinion, the Indian Monsooned Malabar, as a SO is streets ahead of anything else Ive roasted. In fact, mad as it may seem to some, Id happily drink this and nothing else forever. I find that the velvety crema goes right through the cup and it has the most gorgeous mouth feel and flavour of all.
