    Re: Affogato

    Grendel,

So you tried the pistachio? What did you think?

I will be trying the hazelnut pretty soon. Might make it the friday afternoon.

    They are becoming addictive

I tried the pistachio - it was great but I liked the vanilla better - just a hint of a marzipan-like flavour in the pistachio and I am not a great fan of marzipan. (not usggesting that there was any in there it is just that when you grind nuts you get flavours a little like that - even with pistachios).

        Re: Affogato

I was in a Restaurant in St Kilda the other night - fantastic food, really nice beer (Moo Brew, from Tassie), and on the menu was affogato!

Then I saw what they wanted to charge for the affogato ... $18!

              Re: Affogato

Hmmm ... lets see what $18 would buy you at home ... 1kg of green beans from bean bay, 2x tubs of blue ribbon vanilla ice cream. Should be enough for at least a month worth of afogatos :P :P :P

Woah mattyj, $18 is steep... multi hatted establishment in StKilda?

                http://www.enzo.com.au/menu_dolci.html

In the burbs, the highest Ive seen is for $15, which I think is stupidly high for the outer suburbs of Melbourne. Decent restaurant for the burbs, mostly attracting suitys, but that doesnt excuse such a high price for what is minimal kitchen prep effort.

Even allowing for the Frangelico thats too high a price.

How much was a Chardonnay? $100 a bottle?

                    Re: Affogato

Needless to say, I didnt order the affogato (and the $18 included a nip of your preferred liquer ... but still!) ... why would I have coffee there when St Ali was a 5 minute walk from the hotel???

It was at Stokehouse, which we loved! The food was great, the upstairs room was great, the view was fantastic! But yeah ... expensive.

But I did get a $12 beer there - Moo Brew from Tassie. That was like a pleasant slap in the face with a bunch of really aromatic flowers ... so floral, and so sweeeeeet ... top beer that!

                      Re: Affogato

$18 for an affogato, did the icecream have gold leaf in it or something :-?

I make my own vanilla bean icecream in the summer, and a lovely shot of coffee over it is something to behold. I always serve it in separately glasses.

The cafe where I have been having coffee for years always served it this way and it is quite often and early morning treat. 8-)

                        the affogatto

Hi guys, what do you all think about the affogatto. simply a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of coffee. this seems to allow u to enjoy all the strengths of the espresso experience while guarding you against any of the possible dissapointments. even a mediocre shot will still shine through and dampen the negatives. a great shot will show its true colours. im hooked on these. adding icy milk to an affogatto gives u the iced coffee which is great for those hot days.

                          Re: the affogatto

Funny you ask... my last bought coffee was an affogato and it was amazing!

I had it at a Gelatissimo. They present it in a really cute way: on a little rectangular tray, with the espresso in little white creamer jug. I chose hazelnut gelato, so I got the gelato in a little expresso glass with a pile of fresh hazelnut pieces in a small ceramic dish. You dump the nuts on top of the gelato and then pour your espresso over the lot. Great way to serve it and exponentially adds to the fun factor!

Oh, I almost afforgot... the expresso was good too!

Count me in as an affogato fan.

big fan of the affogato, after all its another way to play with coffee!

Whether straight with vanilla gelato or with a shot of franjelico over hazelnut gelato, even gently blended with pannacotta gelato its delicious!

                              Re: the affogatto

I am about to experiment with the affagatto at home. My Dad manages a Peters Ice-cream distributor and when he visited us yesterday he asked what ice-cream we would like this time. At first I went with the standard but than recalled a new flavour they have just brought out in their range. Vanilla with vanilla bean, so now we have a 5 litre tub of that bad boy sitting in our freezer ready to experiement a little. I recall Grendel talking up a vanilla bean affogatto in Perth. I am sure my shots wont be as good as Epics but being on the East I will have to settle with my playing instead.
Seen as though it is a warm day in Sydney today I will being enjoying one shortly.

                                I am an affogato addict.

Great with plain vanilla ice cream but golden north honey ice cream is pretty good too.

Oh and I make my own vanilla icecream too.
