  • Cleaning up from the daily grind

I find that as I get more involved in my coffee rituals I make quite a mess. In days of old it was dump the filter basket in the trash and be done. Now I have coffee dust, chaff, grinds in my press pot, dry coffee pucks in the portafilter etc.
Most of this is pretty straight forward to clean up.
Now coffee is one of the worst things you can send down your drain. So what I am looking for is ideas on how others have solved the need to clean. For instance my press pot is one of my joys in the morning but I hate cleaning it.

    Ideas?

    Hiya george338,

I dump the grinds from my press pot into the toilet.

Spent pucks go into the garbage bin.

Two paintbrushes... 1 thinny and 1 fatty. To brush down my grinder collar area and widebristles for the bench top/work area.

All of my spent grounds go to the trees in the back yard. Some also make their way into the chilli plant.

Pucks go into the compost and after a quick wipe into the garbage for any grinds that are hanging around a wipe down with a damp cloth.

i do this too. i recently read somewhere that caffeinne kills slugs and snails. must explain why them tomato plant leaves arent chewed on yet

although, i wonder if they have the same effect on worms :S

All my pucks go into compost bin as does chaff from roasts and excess grinds etc.

I take the drip tray from the machine into the garden and water various plants in turn.

Worms in my compost bin have never been healthier.

Re: Cleaning up from the daily grind

I believe worms love the coffee grounds.

My stray grounds from the benchtop get wiped up with a cloth and the cloth rinsed in the sink.

Leftover grounds from the grinder either go into the knock box or a collection jar to use as seasoning shots after machine cleaning.

Used pucks sometimes go in the garbage (make the bin smell better).
Some go into my (unused atm) vege patch.
Some get smashed up and put into my watering can to be used on my potted plants (my lime tree is looking pretty good right now).

Thanks for that, what a great idea. I hate waste and you while the grounds go in the compost I would rather they were used first ;D

Maybe I should put the grounds on my strawbeerris. Blasted slugs and snails keep eating them

hmm, must be another explanation for the worms in the compost disappearing. maybe feeding them too much. worm obesity? ;D

anyway a link to report on the effect of caffeinne on moluscs like snails and slugs (http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn2470). not sure if decaf grounds would be much help then :P

Must tell OG. We try to garden organically and my mint has also been chewed by Rotten little green caterpillars [smiley=angry.gif]

Maybe a spray of diluted sepresso will send them on their way. [smiley=evil.gif]

                          Youre welcome.

I am a Process Improvement professional after all.

I changed my cleaning schedule to fortnightly after taking usage into consideration.
I collect the leftover grounds during the 2nd week and have enough for 2 double shots by the time I clean the machine (the instructions say 1 but Id rather 2).

The coffee pucks from my knock box go into the worm farm for organic composting - and you have never seen so many happy worms chewing so quickly!

Also helps to rid the compost of excessive exposure to the dreaded fruit fly, although, now I have the problem of too much compost and not enough garden!
