Recent research over the last 5 years is saying that caffeine is in fact not a diuretic.
Believe that if you wish, Javaphile.... but the evidence, here in Australia at least, is to the contrary.... so I wont be straying too far from the Mens Room after a heavy hit of caffeine!! ;D

If caffeine was anywhere near as bad a diuretic as it is claimed to be by many, Id have been a shriveled up husk blowing in the wind many years ago as coffee is virtually my only liquid intake and has been for years. 8-) ;D

My GP went berserk when I confessed my coffee consumption to him. He didnt buy into the arabica having less caffeine and espresso being one of the low caffeine methods of brewing.
Then hes a twit who needs to pull his head out of his nether regions.

With most varietals of Arabica beans it is physically impossible to have 100mg of caffeine in an espresso made from 7g of beans as there isnt that much caffeine in the beans.

Heres a post/discussion that has addressed this question previously: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1115516893/29#29

But caffeine is a diuretic -- it removes water from the body, and that is one good reason why it should not be taken after a heavy alcohol drinking bout.

I usually have 2-3 milk base espresso per day.

If I consume more than 3 coffee, per day, I can smell coffee aroma when I pee. Is it the sign of kidney failure or everybody suffer the same problem?

So coffee flavoured liqueurs or affogatos are bad?

Lucky I couldnt find the Frangellico tonight to add to my iced coffee.

usually, the only way I can tell if I have consumed too much caffeine too quickly, is that I start to get heart palpitations, then I think to myself:

"Ohh well... I had better drink some water to dilute all that coffee, then!"
    P
I dont know that drinking water is going to do any good as far as countering the caffeine --- the amount of caffeine is still in your system irrespective of how much water is also in there.

But caffeine is  a diuretic -- it removes water from the body, and that is one good reason why it should not be taken after  a heavy alcohol drinking bout.   Alcohol is also a diuretic, and will dehydrate you. Taking coffee in that condition only serves to compound the dehyrdation effect.
