        Re: Buying beans online

Thanks Mocha Zarba but I was looking for freshly roasted beans sent in one way valve bags at a reasonable price. Ive ordered from a non site sponsor (am I allowed to mention them? >) and will report (if Im allowed >) on their service. There is a variety of prices among the site sponsors but Ive chosen a company who took the trouble of explaining to me by email how often they roast, how they package, how they deliver etc etc. One of site sponsors hasnt replied to an email I sent a week ago. That leaves a bad impression. Am I allowed to mention them?

PS Yes I know I should be roasting (please dont remind again) . Ill do that later!

          Re: Buying beans online

I look forward to hearing how the beans work out for you Barri. Fresh beans sure to make a big difference. I bought some roasted beans today, as I got lazy and ran out before I roasted my own :-[ They leave a great aroma in the house after grinding and brewing up a couple of drinks. And taste is superb.

Did you get a blend or a single origin?

Be sure to gives us your impressions and tasting notes. Probably without naming the non-sponsor site My problem is I only buy roasted beans when I have been lazy so dont get a chance to test out some of the sponsor beans as I normally need them there and than so drive to my closest fresh outlet. Unfortunately I am in the wrong part of Sydney to make it to Di Bartoli at Bondi. But one day I will.

Single I think coffeechaser. This unnamed company said they roast daily and send them so that we get them in 24-48 hours in 500g or 1kg one way valve bags. That way they are as fresh as you could get. I should get them tomorrow and Im looking forward to dialing in the grind. This company is in Melbourne (am I allowed to say that????? :) and they have been mentioned on this site before.

                Re: Buying beans online

                Mal et al....

Ive been very frustrated ---- no more like angry----- at the number of people who have mocked or flaunted the site rules in recent days.

We have had several attempts at blatant Evilbay advertising and others who clearly think it is their "right" to promote whatever business or activity they see fit.....

This excellent site is very expensive to run - and the information swapped between members is priceless..... the cost of making this information available is borne by our generous site sponsors.....

Now any individual can chose to use another supplier - for what ever they want.... but promoting that non site supplier or criticising the fact that you cant promote that non sponsor... is stabbing the very people who make this site possible in the back!

Our site sponsors should be supported whenever possible, and we should all be grateful for their continued contribution - I know I am.

If there is a supplier who could/would make a valuable contribution - then by all means try to get them signed up so they can contribute to - as well as gain from - the site. But until they do - IMHO no way should their business be promoted or even mentioned on this site.....

                My 2c worth.

                  Well said JB,

And no doubt expressing the thoughts of the vast majority of CS members. "White-anting" the support put in by our Site Sponsors doesnt do any of us any favours at all, if you would like to see this site continue on and grow as the vital resource it has become.

                  Mal.

                    Re: Buying beans online

I agree.  The site sponsors here are all businesses, and presumably get enough back for their money to keep them sponsoring the site.  I know from experience how much time they are willing to spend on advice (even for a "smaller" sale), even to the extent of telling me to purchase the same machine from another sponsor when that was going to be better suited to my needs.  The free advice that they give here to people that may or may not purchase from them is invaluable, and I see no reason why any of us should be advertising an external business. On behalf of all sponsors, our thanks Viviane for your support and for that of the overwhelming majority of members. It makes sponsorship an absolute pleasure!

                        Geez I hit a nerve didnt I?

OK point taken and apologies for the "tounge in cheek" comments Mal but when one of the site sponsors has done the wrong thing and a non-site sponsor has done the right thing then I am equally frustrated that I cant let like minded people know about it. And no Mal I am not pushing any barrow, I am just a country guy who loves his coffee and wishes to share his experiences and new found knowledge and above all help others to learn from my mistakes or successes.

Sometimes the site sponsors dont exactly meet my needs and I have to look elsewhere.

                          Re: Buying beans online

I have been guilty of mentioning an Adelaide coffee supplier who I have found to be very good and helpful. Other SA members have mentioned to him that it would be great if he became a site sponsor. Whether he is considering this I do not know. As he is newly set up it may be a bit difficult for him at this time.

CS members in Adelaide do not have a local site sponsor and from time to time people who visit ask for our advice re local roasters. I am quite happy to point them in the direction of this supplier.

Also, I would rather go to a local supplier than order from interstate if I can find it here and get good service. I am also quite happy to support site sponsors if I need to access interstate suppliers. Part of the reason I offered my own home as a drop off/pick up point for the Bean Bay was an attempt to help SA members access the cheaper freight costs that other CS members enjoy because a few site sponsors offer there shops as pick up points.

I hope we can soon get our own local site sponsor to go to here in Adelaide so when we do make recommendations we do not feel guilty for not recommending a site sponsor.

Point out to him, if you havent already that hed be the only Adelaidian sponsor and that he is likely to gain more business from the extra exposure.

I guess as with dealing with any vendor, site sponsor or not, have you given that particular vendor the opportunity to address the "wrong" that you believe was visited upon you. If after reasonable attempts to sort this out for yourself and in the case of a site sponsor, perhaps a PM to one of the Admin team may be in order to inform us what is going on and perhaps action some follow-up....

Id have to say though, that in 99% of such situations, the problem probably comes down to a communications issue more than anything else, leading to the inevitable misunderstandings that flow on from that. Our site sponsors are a pretty good bunch of people and it is surprising to hear that you have had less than an ideal outcome in your particular situation. I also live "out in the bush" and a long way from face to face opportunities to deal direct with our sponsors but at no time have I received anything less than the most courteous and helpful assistance at any time so as I said before, misunderstandings do occur even in the best of circumstances.

Thats good to hear barri , though I was getting concerned after reading several innocuous comments in as many posts. We have a lot of country (bush) members in our midst and we welcome the opportunity to both share and receive advice from all our members regardless of anything but the shared passion that is our love of coffee.

Sure, this is going to happen from time to time.... But as our membership and site sponsor team continues to grow, one would imagine that this situation will become an ever rarer occurrence and we can all get on with the business of enjoying this great hobby/pastime.

All the best barri and happy brewing ;D
