All this talk of adding artificial flavouring to coffee is making me want to cry.......

I personally love Monin syrups. You can get them for about $14 at Peters of Kensington. They are amazing and have such a variety of flavours.

You can get the vanilla bean paste in a jar now at the supermarket. I use this a lot and it is excellent.

It is just a small jar and lasts for agaes.

Instead of vanilla beans, you can buy small jars of vanilla bean paste. Vanilla beans are like $3 each. The jars are like $10 but its equivalent to at least 10-20 pods.

I reckon that would taste even nicer with the vanilla bean , but this is the el cheapo version and the only thing I had in the cupboard at the time. Will try the bean next time.

Sounds better than the bottled stuff! Good basic recipe - if you want to add a little extra touch try to get a few vanilla beans. Slice these down their length and scrape out the seeds - add the seeds to the sugar syrup instead of the vanilla essence.

You can buy beans at coles and woolies in the spice racks but you will find much fresher ones at whole food stores (Like Kakulas Bros in Perth)

Well I tried my efforts at making the Vanilla Syrup and for a first go, it isnt too bad.  Here is my Recipe (pretty easy actually)

    Ingredients:
    2 cups of water
    2 cups of Caster Sugar
    25ml of Vanilla Essence

    Intructions:
Bring water to boil in saucepan
Add Caster Sugar and Stir until dissolved
Turn down heat and simmer for approx 5 mins (Giving it a stir every minute)
Turn off heat and allow to cool
Once cooled, mix in Vanilla Essence (Add more or less to taste)
Put into Glass bottle with sealable lid (ie. screw cap) and give a little shake.

All Done (Vanilla Syrup for your Favourite Coffee Cocktail) Yum
I add about 2 teaspoons into my coffee but one might be enough just to give that hint of flavour
Might try another flavour next time.  Hope you like it as well.

Im usually making on the order of about 2L at a time. Id use 100mL of essence.

Id say somewhere in the order of about 15mL essence to 300mL syrup. In your case, 25mL for your 500mL batch. If its not strong enough, add a little more until you find the concentration you prefer.

If you have access to flavoured essences you can make your own syrups.  Use a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water.  Bring to the boil stirring constantly until all sugar is dissolved.  Pour into glass bottle and allow to cool.  Add flavoured essence of choice.  Give a good shake, and use at your leisure.
That sounds like a plan. Might try the Vanilla Syrup as I have got Vanilla Essence in the cupboard. how much Essence would I need to use? I would make about 500ml of the syrup.

I never use them in hot coffee drinks. Only iced coffees and frappes.

    That is a good price.

Hudsons also sell their vanilla - and I think they have caramel too for about $5.00 for 500ml.

    Very good quality too.

I bought a syrup today which is the Bickfords Caramel syrup. $3.95 for 300ml. Is this a good price? I thought is was compared to the Gloria Jean range of $14.95 750ml or $9.95 for 375ml. Havent tried any other syrups ecept this one. I had to use about 3 teaspoons to get a decent flavour. Is this compariable to other syrups used?
