Following on from Kohi’s post on 29. Jan 2008. I’d give XXXXXXXXXXX a big miss!!!
Service was very smug and rude – could have just been the 2 girls on at the time. But clearly they thought they were doing us a huge favour. As far as the coffee I got, it was good but lukewarm. There are so many good coffee places around, don’t bother here.
And this being your first post on the forum jrob,.. hmmm.  Perhaps sticking to Good coffee in Melbourne CBD? as the title asks,..would have been better. Not cool giving the name of a cafe and advising that people not to bother going there. Is damaging at best.

    MODS?

mod edit- we dont need that style of post here thanks...Original post deleted.

"One Star Cafe" in Victoria St.

But if you go just remember the wise adage "Dont judge a book by its cover" (nor by its price)

Re: Good coffee in Melbourne CBD?

As we were going to be in Melbourne for a couple of days, I did a quick search, found this thread and jotted down a few of the recommendations. We were near Octane in McKillop so stopped for coffee the first morning. Best coffee I have ever had (Note - I am a milk coffee drinker and do not consider myself to be any type of expert). Where in St Kilda in the afternoon, the place we picked was a very poor comparison. The next morning, we did not hesitate to go back to Octane. Same high standard again.

The depressing thing is that it drove home to me how much I need to work on my skills. Must go and take a barista course I think, so that I can get the best out of my gear.

First time poster, first time anything here really!

Im always on the look out for a good coffee and now i have a new list to go and test out. Im no super dooper barrista (one "r" or two?) but i do like a hot cup of java that is made by people who care about the final product.

BBB and St Ali, in my book, are the bench mark of elite coffee making in Melbourne. From the roasting, grinding, blending, beverage producing right down to enjoy the last drop in glass.

Id just like to add a few suggestions...
"Liar Liar" in Hawthorn, just off Glenferrie rd, kinkorna st i think it is. Some of the people there work at St Ali and BBB. Top place
"Apte" in Alphington, just on lower heidelberg rd. Nice quite place on a busy major road! Good chef there too. Same guy owns or runs Liar Liar.
"Bliss" in Camberwell, Toorak road before it becomes Warrigal road. Jimmy is one of the best around. pumps out a lot of lattes but does each one with love =)
"Bunny" on Riversdale road, corner of Through Road in Surrey hills. Gravity coffee, dont know to much about it but tastes good and presentation of place/coffee are both pretty good.
"7 Grams" on Church St in Richmond. The overall taste is great but the lARTe is brilliant.
"The Mailing (Maling) Room" corner of Canterbury rd and Maling rd. Nice place, good staff, nice coffee but this place is for people who dont like their coffee hot. It isnt a bad thing but its for those with a personal preference of having warm coffee.

All these places are worth checking out. There are more on my list but these are just a couple i frequent. I just realised theyre all in the Inner Eastern Suburbs... i have to get out more!!!

          Cheers

Re: Good coffee in Melbourne CBD?

I had two outstanding cups at Switchboard in the arcade of the Manchester Unity building last week...

Expert pours, great espresso and perfect milk texture- and art.

I reckon it has to be one of the best few in Melbourne CBD...

            Well worth a visit
