            Are there any videos anywhere demonstrating the tools? I know Scotty did the VMB how-to vids, but didnt use the tools during the vids.

              Check youtube, Im sure Ive seen him use them on some of his latte art vids. Though the focus is on the art, not the dosing tools themselves.

                  Re: Scott Callaghan Dosing Tools FTW

                  I got Scotties tools (the domestic 6 tool set) at Di Bartolis (at a latte art course), where we were shown by the man himself how he uses them:

                  - dose to about half full, tap twice on bench;
                  - dose again till mound on top, tap twice on bench;
                  - use tool to (quickly) chop up clumping (if necessary);
                  - strike the tool across the basket (excess grounds back into doser or knock box).

                  Obviously, the grind setting is the first thing to get right, but the dosing tools enable a finer adjustment after that and can take into account the shower screen height of your particular machine. I generally use the #2 or 3 tools with my double basket, although I find I can use the #6 tool with the single basket without adjusting grind or technique.

                  I love the SC dosing tools, I get great consistency with them and I think Id be lost now without them.

                    Exactly GregJW

                    Its been a great help, and actually surprised me the different levels needed for different beans etc.

                      generally you have to pay to get the websites with demonstrations

                        I purchased the home set (6 tools) a few weeks ago and have only required tool #2 and #3 to date.
                        Exactly,
                        I dont think theres any problem with just making those tools at home. its not a rocket science to cut those two (or 6 or 66 pieces) with different curves to suit your needs. I couldnt understand why those tools are so expensive when you buy them

                        my machine has a low shower screen, so I had to do this - took a pair of scissors, few old plastic cards and voila!

                          I had a chance to ask Scottie about his tools today (no puns, please!) and he uses them himself and loves them.

                          Apparently the "home" set have sold really well!

                            Re: Scott Callaghan Dosing Tools FTW

                            I have the home set, and use them when I have visitors or I dont feel like getting my fingers dirty. I still like the specific feel of compression and distribution under my curved finger for my own shots.

                            Gregs description of Scotties technique sounds like a more accurate way to do it compared to my current technique with the tools - overfill, compress a little/distribute on-the-go NSEW with slanted tool, then vertically scrape back into doser. Ive been finding a bit much variation with this method and reverted to the finger.

                            Time to try Scotties technique methinks. Perhaps a typed scrap of paper with Scotties suggestions could come packaged with the home tools?

                              Only once? Not North-South and East-West?

                                Did anyone notice if Scottie used them on the weekend ;P

                                Thats really weird.  I always dose my Maver the same as I dose for a La Marzocco, which has a fairly high shower screen.  I have always had to dose less when using a giotto, vbm or expobar.  Perhaps you need to replace your gasket or install a spacer behind it?

                                Only once? Not North-South and East-West?
                                Thats how I use them. Personally, my approach to working out a dose/distribution regime is to start as simple as possible and only add steps if they achieve something. Going back and forth once strikes off and fills in the large holes towards the edge of the puck. It also delivers a consistent, repeatable dose ... provided that you have overdosed within the same ballpark and rapped against the forks the same number of times. If you are getting good shots, why would you add any more steps to it?

                                Cheers,

                                Luca
