yeah I wondered about that, they are stored in open air large containers and I have seen them pull out the giant bags from underneath so I figured the freshness may not be best. So where do you get good quality beans from if you arent in a CBD? Mail order? What about Gloria Jeans?
Ooh waa - you said a dirty word! Well, 2 actually. Next time you go into a GJs (make it the last time) take note of the only 2 things they have in the store that I covet - they will have 2 Ditting Grinders there.

If youre after roasted coffee then mail order is indeed your best bet - try the buy brown button on the left of the screen or one of the other sponsors, many of whom sell roasted coffee.

I agree, we all strive to improve our coffee making skills and equipment, but when I am out working and one of my clients offer me a coffee I aways say yes even if its instant, filter or espresso machine brewed, after all its still a coffee to be enjoyed (and an excuse to slack off for a while!!)...................

    Sounds inviting.
Just curious about the Nutshack. I used to buy from there but I could never get them to grind it right and it either clogged my machine or was too course. Now Im looking at buying a grinder, I was wondering if they were worth another shot. Do they have a good reputation or not for nice beans?
They are supplied by a major Melbourne roaster which produces quite good stuff. What happens to it when it gets to the nutshack is a totally different kettle o fish. Beans stored for who knows how long in clear perspex hoppers in a shop there to sell nuts as its primary business would be ringing some big alarm bells for me....

Id reckon the chances of finding fresh coffee there would be about 0.1%....

I usually have 1 or 2 cups a day at the roastery where I work. I make sure its a perfect extraction with perfect milk, otherwise I dont drink it. If youre going to limit your intake, the cups you do drink have to be awesome.

I have to disagree with "Every time I walk into a coffee shop.... "Mmmm Coffee" " and "even a crappy little plunger coffee made with frozen ground crap is actually awesome".

    I agree with the rest.

The thing I love about coffee is that it has not gotten old at all (in the 2years ive been into coffee)...

Every bag of beans.... I smell and think "Mmmm amazing"
Every coffee I drink.... I taste and think "Mmmm YESSSSSS"
Every time I walk into a coffee shop.... "Mmmm Coffee"

I think we get so carried away on all the finer points and making everything perfect, when infact, even a crappy little plunger coffee made with frozen ground crap is actually awesome.

Re: OMG! I just had THE best coffee

I undoubtedly had the best shot I have ever had from my Silvia in ten months yesterday afternoon, and man was it deserved! Having been in hospital with Mim and #2 for approaching 48 hours, I had the choice of Blend 43 or Douwe Egberts instant (choose your poison). Actually in all honesty neither were too bad with a bit of sugar so long as I thought about it as a different drink, which is how I view all instant coffee. But I digress.

Silvia was probably on for only about 30 minutes warming up. The coffee was Yahava Organic which I guess would have been about two weeks post roast and not particularly well sealed since the bag was not resealable and had been opened for at least a week and sealed with a rubber band. Mazzer Mini was left on the same setting Id used for this blend three days earlier. So with these raw materials I must say I wasnt expecting any miracle shots. I was using the Synesso double ridgeless basket. Used my standard technique, tamped with a fitted Deluxe tamper, locked and loaded and hit the switch. Out came the nectar, rich and hazelnut brown, and I watched for blonding which typically came around the 15 second mark. But it just kept going, and going, and going; my eyes were getting wider and wider concentrating for a blond streak to appear, and by the time it finally started to lighten and streak I would have had a good 60-70ml of espresso in the bottom of a 180ml cappuccino cup. It was the most delicious reward for enduring hospital coffee! 8-)

Interesting that such a result could have come in such unideal circumstances...

Wait until you start roasting your own and get yourself a good quality grinder... youll think youve died and gone to heaven.

Just finished my ideal cup, and since I work from 10am to 10pm today I wont get another one until tomorrow.

The coffee they use at work just doesnt cut it....

My family couldnt comprehend why I traded in my Via Venezia for a Silvia, until they tasted the difference in the coffees I served them, the Saeco is gathering dust in the corner now!!!!!!!!
