What is your favorite pre roasted coffee?

I know its a wierd question to ask on a site deicated to home roasting but I was asked by a new member today.

Our Fav is Atomica on Brunswick Rd in Melbourne. Also Sam at Tutto Caffés Liquid Gold and Orgasm blends are pretty good too. Im not sure if he mail orders tho.

Geez been a while Rich, after roasting my own Im not sure if Id trust anybody else. ;D Its probably been about 3 months since Ive bought any pre-roasted.

But now that you mention it Atomica is pretty nice. Beans are always very oily though.

McIvers at the Vic. Market have some pretty nice roasts too (not sure who does their roasting). If you can fluke the beans when theyre at their freshest.

One other one worth mentioning as well is Fetish Coffee. Their B52 blend is a nice all-rounder.

All that said. Gimmie the heatgun anyday. :P

I used to buy from McIvers at Vic Market when I worked in the city. Apparently contract roasted by someone out in Mulgrave area.
I bought their Mocha blend for a number of years. They also sell a couple of Grinders coffees. Their turnover was pretty good. I always liked it back then, dont know how they would compare nowadays

PrePackaged we like the Illy coffee, and the venting tins that come with the coffee are great too. Gives us an excellent container to store the decent coffee in.

Hey FB! Speaking of coffee containers. Have you seen the ones theyve got at the supermarket?

Theres a promotion running with Vittoria Coffee (yuck). Theyre selling containers with the pump on the side. I bought one on Sunday. You can stick your beans in and basically it pumps (most) of the oxygen out and seals. You just press a button to open it. It also got a dial on it which allows you to put the date on the can FWIW.

You get a pre-ground Vittoria brick (gave that to my parents) and the container for $11.00. Not a bad buy.

As a newbie, the question begs. Ive bought my freshly roasted beans (I hope), and as advised, the type will determine when they are at their prime and when they are stale. Now, as the only coffee drinker in the house ( yep, the minister in charge of finances had a melt down, so I have a Silvia and RockyDS combo) how do I stop the beans going past their use by date? Over a weekend, I would have maybe six cups, and one each work day. Not enough to use up 200gms over a fortnight. (mind you I use that much to get the grind right - Im still learning). Can I freeze them? Does storage in the fridge help?

Heres another question while Im on a roll. Is there a place/shop venue WEST of Melbourne City to get the fresh roasted beans from. Convincing the Finance Minister that I have to go to Brunswick street or the Vic markets every Friday for a small quantity of beans, is going to land me in Myer or City Central every time!!

Your exact predicament is what led me to begin roasting my own beans.
I used to work in the city until about 2002. I then found I was making special trips in just to buy coffee. I would buy 500g or 1kg roasted at a time and store in an airtight canister. I found this worked fine for me at the time, but I dare say I am a bit more fussy these days.
Regarding putting beans in the fridge, I have read a number of passionate opinions on this. The one that I keep referring to is from Alan Frews website:

Best bet - start roasting your own - yee hah!

Boris Welcome to the Group

Geelong is about 80km from Melbourne and if your Game you could always go for a drive (Take ministress of War for a drive and say "oh while im here") and see Richard and Raeeine they will be more than happy (thanx R&R) to sell you some of their stash and all you really need is a heat gun from Bunnings and then you can roast just enough to get you over for 2-3 days and if you have the grinder then your set.

  Once again this forum has provided the insight required to move forward in the personal quest for good cup of liquid nectar. That Allen Frew knows a thing or two. Good website too, now a favourite. Guess Ill buy off the net.

Post Script.   Finally got good milk mico foam last night, though it was the Ministeress hot chocolate. Only took three weeks and 5 liters on milk. But woe be tide the next cafe who serves up hot milk with froth on top!!
