  • Re: Growing coffee

Well spotted on the basil. We have two types and the sweet basil just grows anywhere.

The raisins were planted back in early November not long after they arrived. I dont know if they work off soil temperature, moisture, time in ground, time of year or something else.

Im thinking that they need to come out of that stubby tray ASAP so that the tap room can develop unmolested. Any opinions on whether to risk straight into the ground or pot up first?

Id probably pot em up first, give em a chance to strengthen up a bit before throwing them in the deep end. Thats what I am doing with mine anyways.

Id be happy to be corrected by the professionals though.

If you pot them , do so in large pots or in round bottom thick walled plastic bags. This should stop the roots from getting tangled or permanently warped.

Having said all that...they will grow regardless

Thanks. I think I will pot them then if for no other reason than the pots are where we see and water them.

My two came in small pots when they only had two or three pairs of leaves on them.
I planted them at that size and now they are 3 years old and about 5 feet high.

The first 6 i got were all in 1 1/2 x 4 inch tubes. When i removed them i found to roots were all bound quite heavily. They were all around 1 foot tall.

3 of them went really well but 2 died and the other one hasnt really grown much in 3 years.

Question....given that it is generally acknowledged that Australian beans are somewhat lacking in body, would overseas beans planted here give better results in the cup, or is the generic lack of body due to our conditions?

They have fruit on them now.
Any idea anyone, how long they take to ripen?

                      Think about it Pierre.
All coffee beans in Australia came from overseas.

However, there may be a limited variety here and a different one may give different results.

                        Yeah TG is right...

Our coffee is derived from Jamaica and Hawaiian cultivars but ive been know to be wrong in the past

Its typical of island coffee to be high in acidity and a bit low on body. The higher its grown, the denser it is and therefor body can come out in the roasting process. Soil, humidity and temperature all play a part outside the strain its self.

Ok thanks for that, so if you were to germinate some beans from a very high grown and therefore very dense bean, the cherries you harvested from that tree when grown here would be affected by our lack of altitude.

Thats right! The higher the altitude, the denser the bean due to longer ripening periods and thinner air.

Ok here is the update on the tree that I attempted to save..

1: Grown about another few inches at least

2: Still not as green, but no more dropping leaves

                              3: Cherries are getting bigger.

Id be spreading some chook poo and lime around the drip line right now.

You need some more foliage and green goodness.
