Tony, any chance you want to share some of your coffee with a fellow Novocastrian? ;D

Its a shame I wont be living in the one house for a few years...
Does anybody know how established trees go with being transplanted? :-/

Merci Pierre and no they wont be going to auction.
This lot will be for me, besides which, no one would be able to afford the reserve price considering its a microlot.

          Hi all,
          Im new to this site.
A couple of questions come to mind.
1.Where can I buy coffee plants (preferably somewhere between Gosford and Newcastle...Im in Lake Macquarie). My wifes a horticulturalist so growing issues should be ok for us.
          2. I notice there are several species/cultivars available .Which ones grow best in my region and...most importantly...which ones taste best?
          Cheers.

My trees (about 10) are starting to come of age - did some first pickings of the purple cherries today (one tree only, others need a few more weeks.

I think I will need to do this a few more times as most of the cherries are still green. If they ripen I expect about 3-4x more than this

Heres a look at the tree that all of these came from after the picking.

Do you pick the pink ones as well or do you wait for them to go purplish?

Well I just read some earlier posts and found the link to the document about cherry ripeness, heres a direct pdf download:

              https://rirdc.infoservices.com.au/downloads/10-079

Looks like purple is considered slightly over the hill

When I was experimenting with flavours, I put some of the yirga green seeds in a kombucha. Kombucha is a fermented tea drink basically tea + sugar + kombucha scooby which is the mother. It is like vinegar mother but different bacteria. Seeds were started to grow roots after a week.

Based on this result, I believe, an acidic environment should be provided as the stratification process that is implemented for olive and other hard seeds to help them germinate.

You can try like black tea + sugar and a bit of vinegar in a glass jar, dunk the green beans and watch them if they sprout. As soon as they grow about half a milimeter root, wash them and trasnfer into good soil with relatively higher pH. Water regularly. I am thinking that they would be happy in a green house in cold areas like mine in Canberra.

wow that tree IS loaded in the background

Unfortunately mine are all in pots due to limited soil space - but they seem to be doing okay.

Occasionally I get 3 seeds out of a cherry.
                              ...
I cant recall having read anything on this phenomenon; has anyone else?
Ive got lots of these from my trees too - looks like a really fat cherry and then you squeeze three out of it. 8-)

A great two page spread on growing/preparing coffee beans in the Newcastle Herald last week - Im assuming its your work @tonyt?

Very nice job - great pics and the essential facts from seedling to grinder, complete with pointers to CS & SweetMarias.
