  • Is Coffee Food?

    Hi Everyone,
Im just wondering whether in Australia coffee is considered a food product? If it isnt, what is its classification.
Im under the impression that coffee is NOT a food.
It is roasted, ground and pressurized under temperature to extract and essence (espresso) and then is knocked away never to be used in again ... except in some cafes :P
So the way I see it is that the roasted coffee itself is never ingested...

Well, Ive laid down the gauntlet... Please give me all of your thoughts, opinions, and evidence if you can find any.
    Cheers All.

Is any oil derived from food , a food?

    Same concept for mine.

BTW - My answer is yes, coffee is a food. As are the edible oils derived from foods.

And the AQIS certainly classifies coffee beans as food.

Good point, but what about the beans themselves, should they be classified category as bread? Cooked Produce that is ingested...

The coffee isnt roasted for a for a family to nibble on a long car trip - if you know what I mean...
I think the oil is definitely as much a food as olive oil, but we swallow olives yeh? We (general public) dont ingest beans.

For the record I do, but thats for tasting only really.

          Gday Chris ...

          Interesting question ...

My initial thoughts would be that before bread becomes bread, its constituted primarily from raw flour - which has a use-by-date, and is consequently regarded as a food. Green beans, like flour, will eventually go stale then rancid. Theyre both perishable, capable of being eaten in their raw state :P, so to my thinking ... food!

Sure, the end product of green beans (espresso) is derived, but then so is vanilla extract derived from a pod ... both classifiable as food!

          ... just my 2c ...

          Tony

Chocolate covered coffee beans - definately food

Ground coffee used in sauces - flavourings - and even baking - definately food

But I think Greenman and askthecoffeeguy got it more right with "Manna from heaven" and "Nectar of the gods"

                  "Food" as per dictionary.com:

                  "food–noun
                  1. any nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, promote growth..."

Ticks all the boxes in my book (well... I am assuming the growth part is referring to my green bean collection)

                      Re: Is Coffee Food?

Well...........If I remember my history correctly it was some observent sheperd hunderds of years ago that noticed his sheep eating the berries from certain bushes and then noticed they were more energetic afterward and then he tried eating them and felt the same effect never experienced before. Thus was coffee born! Sounds like food to me........No we dont comsume it that way now but its injested like any other food so to me its food.
