Ive heard that its possible to pull out the plastic inserts on some pressurized baskets, which vastly improves the shot

Also, what coffee are you using and has it been freshly roasted?

    Cheers,

    Pat

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Yup, the 20ml shot was what i was looking for.

Im using a cheap machine with a pressurized basket so, after a few complete disasters (stuck/blocked basket), i found out that my best bet would be to stick with a double basket, put about 60% more grounds than i would in a single basket, and tamp a little harder (exactly 25kg... yup, i actually got a weighing scale to tamp on). I then dump the first 1.5 secs of flow and take the remaining 16-18 secs of flow. It is roughly two thirds of a shot glass (not including crema) and has an acceptable taste.

As Mal (bolb) said, the mocha java swiss water decaf is a nice drop if youre looking for decaf, but I dont think thats what ezralimm was asking, I think a well dosed and tamped single shot of decent fresh coffee restricted to a ristretto (20 ml shot) is what hes looking for.

try making a piccolo using only the first 20mls of a single pour, then top with about 60ml of milk in a shot glass or a small tea glass (or similar)

or better still pour a ristretto in a demitasse and top with milk

remember the longer the pour the greater the caffeine (and bitterness) which is why I can drink (but dont recommend) 9 short poured espresso coffees in a day and still sleep at night!

    Hi there
The decaf mocha Java from the beanbay is an awesome bean.
I have substituted it at work when they ran out of beans and no one was the wiser about the caffeine side of things, they just thought i had got a different coffee because we had run out.

Hi Ezraimm,if its less caffiene youre after try a shade grown coffee, I hear [mostly from coffeesnobs] that they are lower in caffiene. Or do what david says use decaf

Depends a lot on the bean but stop the shot before you get any blonding.
