I am currently growing a small coffee tree and it is doing fairly well.

Can anyone tell me if I shoukd pick the cherries when they turn red or is it okay if they just stay on the tree until I get decent amount?  Heaps are still green but 30-40 are red and I am not sure if should pick them.
Cherries will turn red at different intervals
I would pick them now while just ripe
and pick again the next crop as they reach there ripe stage

Would make a very nice hedge though.
yes, i think coffee trees would make a terrific hedge. they grow really dense, the leaves look good and every summer you get masses of bright cherries. plus, pruning doesnt worry them much, so you can keep them in shape.

Re: Question on Growing Coffee Trees

My parents have always had a coffee tree - in 2 different houses.  They have always been planted on the south side of the fence in a spot that has some protection from southerly winds.  One house had browny grey loam and the other well drained red volcanic soil.  NSW mid coast area.

Both trees fruited their heads off and seedlings were always popping up around the immediate vicinity of the parent tree.  I have no idea what cultivar they were but the the second tree was a seedling from the original tree.

I harvested them one year and processed and roasted them.  They had a high caffeine content so I could only drink one cup at a time but the flavour was weak.  Perhaps I should have roasted them longer(?) than the mid to dark brown colour.  My parents never bothered to do this as they just liked the tree as an ornamental.  It never grew taller than 3 metres tall - they never gave it any special attention other than to prune it back every now and then.

Would make a very nice hedge though.

    Nice coffee trees Chris

I have recently lost 3 of my 4 small coffee trees due to to much rain

They were given to me by another CS member that grew them from seed

Mine are about 4 years old now.
One has grown a little taller and is almost 1.9m the other about 1.6m.
Sydney being a little warmer probably makes the difference to yours.

A quick look the other day revealed one branch sporting as many cherries as last years total crop.

Im still a little disappointed though, as the flowering was prolific but a large percentage of flowers havent resulted in fruit.

How tall is that tree in the pic Chris and how old is it now?
Gday TG. Its about 1.5m tall and I think 5 years old. Its the more ragged looking of 2 I got at the same time, but the other is yet to flower. I have another 2 which are about 60cm and around a year old

Same here last year; not enough for a single shot.
This year though is looking a lot better.
    Fingers crossed.

sorry for the extra posts, but I cant seem to work out how to attatch multiple files to one post, short of hoasting the images elsewhere and linking.
Just select the + button to the right of Attachments over there to the left    You can have up to 5.
    Thanks AM, all fixed!

Nice trees    Nice lawn as well  :

Watch for the wind and any sun burn from the reflection from teh house.
haha yea, this is just a small corridor (about 1500-2000mm) up the side of the house. so it should be well sheltered, the other side of the concrete path has a row of cammelias next to the fence, so its a decent wind break.
we used to have a nice lawn out the back :... thats until the chooks got to it. ;D ;D
Ill deffs keep an eye on that sun though, its a pretty good intencity at the moment, but in the hight of summer it might be abit strong.
thanks for all the tips mate!
