  • Finding a good {Cup} to drink

Can a cup somehow enhance the flavor of a coffee?  ;D
edit: If yes, what then would be the characteristics of a good cup ?
    (pic pls)

If anyone has read "All Marketers Are Liars" by Seth Godin, on the first chapter
he gives an example of Georg Riedel successfully telling a fib about his wine glasses enhance
    the wine taste.

Re: A good Cup of coffee

The right good quality wine glass can actually. Ill explain:

Taste and smell are linked. Try tasting something with your nose blocked and youll get my drift. A HUGE determining characteristic of wine is its nose. The right sized and shaped glass can ensure that as much of the wines "nose" as possible gets focused into your nose and thus enhances the taste of the wine.

The big end wine tasting and judging courses around will usually cover the glass before you even get near any wine.

      RE: reidel
i think that it can to a certain extent. i think that they go overboard in saying theres a diff glass for every single varietal of red.

in coffee, i know that the flavour of espresso is very linked to temperature stability. so that means the espresso cup should have sufficient insulating qualities.

One of Hazels notes from Sundays Aromafest shootout was that my espresso cup wasnt warm enough and that it detracted from the taste.

        So the answer is yes.

Further to Wreckers comments and the overall drift of this thread, try a simple and relatively inexpensive test. Next time you have a bottle of wine, pour some into a glass vegemite jar or similar. Then sniff the wine in the glass (the nose) and then take a sip (the palate). Repeat this with some of the same wine in a $4 standard tasting glass. In my experience, there is a phenomenal difference in smell and taste, which is due to the tasting vessel. I dont know how a standard wine tasting glass would handle coffee, but it would be interesting to try with a known bean/roast/grind/machine.

Careful "winesnobs" dont hear you say that! About 90% of all coffee drinkers would probably reckon weve gone so far overboard weve lost the plot. I say allow them their indulgence and they can turn a blind eye to your next heat gun purchase.

Thats the beauty of making coffee - for a few hundred dollars we can learn how to make a great cup of coffee,
now to start a winery dunno we prob need about 10 mil at least? lol [smiley=rolleyes.gif]

Re: Finding a good {Cup} to drink

back on topic there is a big difference the right cup can make. There are a few issues to look at when selecting a perfect cup

                    1) temp stability of the cup - as mentioned the temp of the espresso has huge effect on the flavour profile

                    2) lip thickness - As you tilt the cup to sip your espresso, the thickness of the rim determines how much crema flows over the lip and into your mouth, with obvious flavour effects

                    3) shape of cup - the shape of the cup and have an effect on 1 and 2 as well. A narrow cup will have thicker crema and in a wide cup the crema will stretch thin

                    4) Pure "it feels good" factor - I had to add in a subconsious reaction factor because its so true. If the cup feels good to hold, it tastes better
