To all my fellow Nuveau Castleans, has anyone explored the option of doing a BeanBay drop off in our area?
Hi Hoyks, have you thought about starting a new topic in General Coffee Related and seeing if you get a few bites?. The answer to your question is not to my knowledge.
Hey, I would have by-passed the Wild Bean and gone to the McDs.
I, too, have had one coffee from Wild Bean Cafe and agree wholeheartedly: pig swill! But, hey, they make great travel mugs - Ive got a groovy red one I have on my desk at work!
I Have sinned Brothers and Sisters.
After spending a Few days at a Mates place in Brissie I travelled back home to the North east coast of NSW. I Stopped at a BP Servo at Chinderah NSW to top up with Petrol and there was a Wild Bean Cafe there as well as a MCds. Passing by the Maccas I got a Long Black with an Extra Shot IN A TAKE AWAY CUP from the Wild Bean Cafe.
THIS WOULD HAVE TO HAVE BEEN THE WORST COFFEE I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. IT WOULD HAVE MADE PABLO INSTANT COFFEE FOR THOSE QLDRS WHO CAN REMEMBER PABLO TASTE LIKE THE BEST ETHIOPIAN BEANS.
BUY A COKE OR A RED BULL IF YOU NEED A CAFFEINE HIT, DO NOT HAVE A COFFEE FROM THIS PLACE/
I tipped it out the window just past Woodburn and called into New Italy and had 2 passable short Blacks to take the bloody taste away.
A Plug here for the New Italy Cafe, The Coffee is not bad and they have some good looking cakes. I have been stopping here for the last 15 years. on my way between Woolgoolga and Kingscliff, They dont do a Bad AUSSIE Burger either. The Italian Museum is worth a look -FREE ENTRY- and they have a OLD Espresso Machine from Lismore there.
if i told them my order (ristretto macchiatto in a espresso cup, preheated of course, with roughly 20ml latte milk (as opposed to just froth, or just milk), id be to ashamed to go back!
and if i did go back id never bring my friends cause they would berate me on how much of a snob i was and that i should just drink the damn coffee.
i think you should tell the barista how you like the coffee (within reason!), after all, they are there to make you YOUR coffee.
ive also been thinking about contacting the few members that i know of from around here and see if there is enough interest in a local Beanbay pick up point, its my understanding we need an order of 25+ kgs to make this happen though.
im not roasting my own as yet but have already started stock piling and now after 3 beanbays will have around 25kg to work my way through once i do start roasting so my orders would only be around the 5kg mark tops :-/
oh and suspension is different alright, a mate said the new place just on the other side of the tracks opposite Kavon is pretty good as well, i think its called the Rolladoor or something like that.
Well, we had to go into town this morning (husbands motor bike needed some seal/gasketty thing) so I managed to convince him to drop in to Suspension so I could see what they had in the way of beans.
Ended up walking out with a 1kg bag and theyre reasonably good. Once again, ran out of beans on a Saturday morning so had to get myself something to tide myself over - highly organised at work, not at all organised at home, as you might have guessed!
:P
I must say that I felt almost like Id walked into a cafe in Italy (not that Ive been there and have a real one for comparison) - it was a very rustic place, furniture wise and the guys behind the counter looked as though they were real baristas, not just some young thing trained in the Starbucks Coffee School. I didnt actually buy a coffee while I was in there, so cant comment on their coffee making, but they were pleasant young men and knew what they were talking about when I asked for a not too strong medium roast bean.
The guy that served me asked so, a 250g bag? and looked shocked when I told him that would only last me two days and asked for a 1kg bag! I think his respect level went up a notch when he realised I wasnt just an occasional coffee drinker who was likely to put the beans in the freezer and sit on them for 12 months!
;D
To all my fellow Nuveau Castleans, has anyone explored the option of doing a BeanBay drop off in our area? If there enough of us interested, I dont mind being the contact point but the only proviso is that wed have to meet at, say, Hexham for the delivery point and it could probably only happen over a weekend, or after 4.45pm during the week. I work at the RAAF Base, so could stop at Hexham on the way home.
Wow (pun intended), 2kg - you put me to shame...I thought I was doing exceptionally well going through 1kg in 3 weeks!
Although, having said that, the 250g I bought yesterday morning is now down to about 100g (actually, they are quite a nice bean and, being fairtrade, I dont feel quite so guilty about not supporting the FairCrack project), so I think Im creeping up there. Thank goodness I go back to work tomorrow...I cant afford to keep up with the beans while on holidays!
Suspension is at the Islington end of Beaumont Street, they used to roast on the premises but the guy that used to do the roasting packed up and went to Sydney (one of the other local CSers passed this info on to me)
i think the original guy that kicked Suspension off is no longer there, the coffee isnt too bad.
i havent set myself up for roasting yet, even though im building a stock pile of green beans so im pretty well much in the same boat with having to order roasted and ordered 3kg of WOW from Andy a week or so back which im quickly going through ( a mate took 1kg )
I just finished off my Sample Pack from Brown BeanBay and they were excellent: and Id definitely recommend them - my favourite was the Sulawesi (something or other with lots of letters). The Wow was great but I just loved the mildness and chocolate-y aftertaste of the Sulawesi!
Ill be going BeanBay again, but just needed a backup for times like today where I didnt get myself organised enough to order beans before my current BeanBay stock ran out and, also, depending on the time of the fortnight it is (ie; off pay week - like this week), I may not be able to afford a kilo all at once plus postage - sometimes I have to make a decision about whether to feed the kids or whether to buy bulk beans. DoCS say that the children win out each time... although there are times like tonight where I wonder how much Id get on the open market for them and whether it would be enough to cover buying myself a home roaster! (VTIC) ;D
I know exactly what youre talking about, beggars cant be choosers.
I was in Williamstown, Melbourne this afternoon, and while there is an abundance of cafes, much to my wifes infuriation, I walked up and down the strip, carefully checking each cafe. Anyway, we settled on one cafe for lunch, but I declined the coffee there (it had all the warning signs of bad coffee).
I ended up having to dash in to the first cafe I saw not long after lunch as my caffeine withdrawal headeache made its speedy onset.
Hi Hoyks/Di, if you order from Brown BeanBay <---- youll get gorgeous fresh beans within 3 days of roasting from our friend Andy. I love the Espresso Wow blend which I use for milk-based coffees.
Maybe all of us Novacastrians should start our own Coffee Club!
Im having a problem at the moment finding any reasonably freshly roasted beans from around our parts. This morning I bought some from a Cafe thats situated in Heritage Gardens (I live in East Maitland) which arent too bad at a pinch, although they were presented to me in a chinese container so no roasting date and cost me $10.00 for 250g - yoiks! They were fairtrade beans, though, and I think that ups the price and Im willing to pay the bit extra if it means the money is going to a better place.
When I first rang the nursery to enquire whether they sold whole beans to the public, I got a nurseryhand rather than the cafe for a start. The nurseryhand recommended a place in Hamilton that roasts their own beans (I think the shop name was Suspension). I dont go into the city very often but might have to check them out next time Im in that direction.
I really feel for you with the coffee shops, though. I used to ask for my coffees quarter strength so that, if it was badly made, at least it wasnt too bitter. If I want a coffee to last, I always ask for Extra Hot when Im ordering. If they look at me disgustedly (which I cant say that I blame them for, now that I make my own coffees and understand the process much better) then I follow it up with "Im taking it back to work, so would like it to last for a while". This then meets with slightly less disdain.
Framey, are you in a cafe, or do you mean you have a commercial machine at home? If youre in a shop, Im happy to come and sample the product!

oh Dennis Dennis Dennis, beggars could not be choosers that day
Darren
Thats funny Darren. I know how hard it can be when you want caffeine and there, beside those prepacked sandwiches and bruised bananas sits a coffee machine and theyre busy. You ask yourself, how bad can it be? And then succumb thinking you can always dose it up with sugar if its unpalatable. Alas, you order then watch in horror as the rate of pour looks like something coming over niagara falls. You realise you have just wasted your dosh and would have been better off buying a coke and the last tightly wrapped apple/cinnamon muffin on the counter.
So you see Darren, beggars can be choosers.
Sorry about the rant - just did 190 coffees in 2 hours and despite not having one am still a bit wired.
oh Dennis Dennis Dennis, beggars could not be choosers that day
well Framey, i may just have to head around to your little cafe, better chain the attack cat up by the sounds of it

geez i couldnt think of anything worse than finding a head hair in my coffee, oh yeah i can re read the line above lol
