Re: Extending the useable life of one-way bags

      Hi,

I have to confess that the big clip that I showed off in the first posting here did not stand the test of time. After it hit the recycling bin, I reverted to a clothes peg, holding together folded down corners.

That was until I discovered the Bag Clip. They come in pairs, red and white, $3, so I bought two sets. They seal a folded over 500g bag very nicely. I picked them up in Melbourne from Nightingale Electrics in Spencer St (which would be worth a visit even if they were out of Bag Clips).

      cheers
      AJ

        Yep,

I do the same Warren (except I get 8-10 uses from each bag Wink)...

Thought it might be a useful thing to know for those people who dont own an Impulse Sealer. I imagine it would be quite effective to be honest - Seal via the Zip-Lock and then fold over and apply the Bag Sealer.... Should work OK..... Huh

        Mal.
So why heat seal the bag - is the zip seal not reliable? Arent you using the zip seal only after cutting the heat seal? Interesting...

        Javabeen.

Zip is only a stop gap and again only as good as teh person sealing it.

When ya re use... A bit of coffee dust in the track etc and not a true seal... Thus a heat seal add a lever of backup and additional trust in the process.

yep, even some new bags will leak out the zip, try it the heat seal is 100% assurity that air will not get IN

OK OK point taken...but arent you using the zip seal once the heat seal is cut away and opened after youve left the beans to age/degas? Thats what I reallywant to know...dont want to take this too off topic :

Guys, Id appreciate if you would move the bag discussion out of the Roaster thread. As I mentioned a few posts ago, I have revived a bag sealing thread here:
                http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1218979308/0#31

                Could you please use that?

                thanks

Yeah javabeen, after the initial resting period i only use the zip lock, the heat seal works well during the resting period, after a while you get to know what beans need what resting periods, when im ready to consume, cut off the heat seal and its all gone in a couple of days, so no hastle there for Monsoon Malaba AA for example, i dont cut off the seal and start consuming until say day 10-12, a LOT of air can get to the beans in that time......

Thanks for that WS. Looks like heat sealing is the way to go. Ive noticed that lately my old bags have not been inflating as they usually do during degas, indicating the zips are probably failing. Will be interesting to see how they go when heat sealed, so I just ordered an impulse 200mm heat sealer.

                      Cheers.
