Re: How much do you drink? What is your limit?

I have tea for breakfast. At about 10 am I have a chocalate bar and an instand coffee (free in my office). Usually I will have an espresso or an long black after lunch. In the evening I will have a glass of wine and an double shot.

Every day i have around 4 double shot Lattes, but sometimes after the pull if it looks too good ill just have the espresso shot straight.

Medium roast beans from Brazil for me.

On average a single espresso has half the caffeine content of a 6 oz. cup of brewed coffee.

I personally run through an average of about 1.5kg a week.

The most I ever drink is on long road trips where Ive been known to go through 3kg of beans brewed as CP in as little as 4 days.

It depends a lot on the roast as well. If you use a milder roast (like they do in Italy), youre going to get a good bit of caffeine. But, if you use an Italian roast (which some places probably do use for espresso, but not in Italy) then youre getting virtually no caffeine.

Well if its not the caffine then its something else I am addicted to, I drink almost exclusively espresso with a little french press on the weekend when I cant be bothered with the mess and delay of starting up the machine. The french press doesnt have the kick of the espresso for me anyway, but I do understand the theory. I read a study a while ago done in queensland regarding the caffine content of espresso shots and they fluctuated widely from store to store, no followup I could see regarding why. I have always been interested to do the work myself but I sadly dont have the equipment to do the testing. Now I think I am getting a little OT but if anyone is interested in a project I would love to be involved to find out.

I think it probably does have something to do with how you expect it to affect you. One interesting thing to note is that espresso has relatively little to no caffeine in it due to the fact that its roasted longer than a French or House roast. If I recall what this TV chef Alton Brown said on the episode of his show on coffee correctly, espresso has so small of an amount of caffeine that its pretty negligible and not much stronger than decaf.

I think theres something more to it.... I know drinking heaps of coffee on an empty stomach ruins me.
Sometimes I have no idea what youre saying Dan - $1.40? - must be too un- 8-) to get it

But, to the point ... yes, Im the same. For me, caffeine + empty tummy = jitterbug. (And yet I do it time and again : )

Im also very interested in the mind-over-matter factor here. I have a friend who whinges long and loud about not being able to drink caffeine at night or he wont sleep. Ive been planning on experimenting on him for ages but havent got around to it. (Oh, and I informed him Id be doing it - Im not a complete nutter ;D ).

I told him sometimes Id give him decaf and tell him it was decaf, and other times tell him it was caffeinated. And sometimes Id give him normal stuff and tell him it was ... and then sometimes I just wouldnt tell him anything ... you get the picture? And then he tells me what he thinks it actually was, based on how he slept that night.

Only problem is I dont see him so much since he got a girl ... so I need a new test subject ... hmm ... my husband might come in handy here ...

Id be interested to see something like this done on a larger scale ... I need a few more friends to test stuff on I think

Oh, I had a point here right ... oh yeah. If people think the caffeine is going to keep them up, will it?

Hmm ... some friends also seem to think an espresso neat affects them more than say a doppio latté ... which makes little sense to me ... unless the milk contributes to the not on an empty stomach factor. I spose it gets into your system quicker - two sips over cradling a mug for a while ...

Hehehe, looking at my ecessive use of ellipses there ... youd think Id had quite enough caffeine for the day :P

Im not gonna lie, Ive not much meat on my bones, I mean I only weight "a buck-forty" at best, and can handle a bit. But another mate of mine weighs heaps of kegs more and cant handle his caffeine. Ive seen some tiny girls pound back coffees with no real signs either.... I think theres something more to it.... I know drinking heaps of coffee on an empty stomach ruins me.

I think youre right, Rocky. Also, I think how long youve been drinking it plays a role. I have a friend who only began drinking coffee now that hes almost 18, and Ive been drinking it since I was 4. Theres definitely a difference in how much it affects us, with it keeping him hopped up whereas it has little to no effect on me unless I drink two or three pots within an hour or so (which I have done).

This is an interesting thread, Ive often wondered about the quantities that others can deal with. I think it is like alcohol (or possibly other drugs) very much dependent upon individual tolerances and subseptibility. I can enjoy a latte in the morning followed by a macchiato after lunch but I never drink coffee after 5pm as I then cannot sleep at night. Sometimes a couple of shots in the morning later gives me a strange feeling of fatigue if I havent consumed much food with it (what I call jelly legs) I am a light-weight however - 60kg - and I suspect body weight has an impact on how much you can consume - like alcohol.

Double shot latte and a double ristretto first thing of a morning, after that depends on the day I am having, up to 3 double ristrettos for a bad one. Mind you I am lucky I get to stand behind my own machine all day so I just have a hit when I need it. Havent hit my limit yet but I think I came close with a 14 hour day and countless shots.

I stand in the no coffee after about 5 crowd as it seems to keep me awake, nothing drastic just mind clicking over too much making it difficult to snooze.

For me, it depends. During the week, maybe a pot (for me around 3 cups since I make small batches) in the evening, although if Im on leave from uni I might drink two pots while just sitting around doing nothing. On the weekend, however, I go crazy and sometimes drink upwards of five pots, although since getting high blood pressure this past summer Ive made myself a limit of three pots per day maximum. Also, Ive noticed that I tend to drink more coffee when French music and cigarettes are present.

Also, as odd as this might sound, I cant stand drinking coffee in the morning, but instead only like to drink it after noon, and especially in the evenings. Perhaps because Im so adjusted to the levels of caffeine, having been a regular coffee drinker since I was 4 years old (20 now), it doesnt keep me up but actually makes me more restful than sans coffee.

I generally drink a triple and a double ristretto in the morning and possibly a regular coffee in the afternoon. On rare occasions I drink an espresso late and have no problems sleeping.
