    Re: Given up coffee!!

This is an interesting discussion. My understanding is that the effects and tolerance are quite individual. For example, I can have a double at 10pm at night and have no trouble sleeping. And its not that I have a high tolerance - my usual max intake is 2-3 coffees per day. Some of my colleagues cannot have any coffee after lunchtime or they cant sleep - poor unfortunates!

Good decaf is acceptable, but always seems to lack a flavour punch to me. Can anyone suggest their favourite decaf source?

    Cheers
    HBL

          Re: Given up coffee!!

Many years ago when I drank Instant coffee I would often notice a nasty lethargic/shakey/cold-sweat type of reaction some hours later. When I moved on to coffee-bags, dripolator and plunger coffee I still occasionally got this reaction. I now drink mainly dripolator or plunger coffee during the working week and espresso machine on the weekends and I rarely get the reaction. I do try to drink a bit more water these days and I wonder if this mitigates the reaction.
The other thought is that I have gradually developed a greater caffeine tolerance over time. Probably a bit of both. Having said that I never drink more than a couple of cups a day as I like it to be a real treat when I do.

            Re: Given up coffee!!

That makes sense Rocky. I think some instant coffees have significantly higher caffeine contents. In fact espresso has a relatively low caffeine content compared to filtered, percolated and plunger. Partly the brewing metod and partly the blend, since robusta has almost twice the caffeine of arabica

Caffeine, mg per standard drink: (Ref: Espresso Coffee. The Science of Quality)
            Boiled 75-135
            Filter 110-200
            Percolated 100-190
            Plunger 90-180
            Instant 45-180
            Espresso 60-80
            Decaf (all) 1-5

So, probably best to keep drinking the good stuff from the Diadema ;D

Cure is a coffee to wash down some Panadol; one of those two gets rid of the headache.
              ;D

As you see above its VERY individual. I got 5 stings by some upset wasps recently and apart from the obvious sting pain suffered no other symptoms, others could die from the same.
No set rules sorry to say ! As for Detox if we take something out of our diet our body will soon be without traces of it, but please remember we cannot speed up natures programme by putting in so called detox products. Very extensive analysis using all manor of devices including CT scanning shows no difference between detox and non detox groups using expensive detox kits. Our body will detox on its own.

Anyway happy drinking whatever your poison

HBL, always be wary of those figures as they are averages only. I read a study done in Qld which showed huge variations in caffeine content of espresso. Unfortunately no follow up to show why the variation.

I would love to team up with a scientist and do a test on my beans to find out for sure.

                  Re: Given up coffee!!

Wow, great responses! Thankyou all for your contributions, Ive really enjoyed hearing different peoples experiences -- and I guess thats the predominant theme that came through: different people have different experiences and effects from caffeine.
To answer some questions and respond to others:
I was only drinking 2 cups on average. On the day before I gave up, when I had "too many coffees", I had only had three espressos! Compared to some of the stories told, Im at the very low-use end and more easily affected. If I have a coffee after 6pm, I have trouble getting to sleep at 10 or 11pm. Also, after a strong coffee, Im noticably more hyper. Without coffee, Im making more sense at staff meetings at work -- less blah, blah, blah blabbing.
Regarding addiction, I agree that it is not soley bio-chemical, but also psychological. For me, Ive discovered that the ritual of coffee is as important as the coffee itself. After Id gotten over the withdrawal effects (which lasted about 6 days) I had a few craving-free days. On these days I gave myself something else to do, rather than have coffee: I would go buy a sweet cake or something, rather than a coffee. In the morning, I would actually think about breakfast, rather than "when am I going to get my first coffee of the day?" So, some of my positive feelings -- and I did feel more awake and more energy -- may be at least partly attributed to my eating better! I digress... I was making the point that I started craving other things... like my sweet cake break. I found myself yerning for that little comforting ritual that takes me away from the pressures of life for a few moments.
As to caffeine hindering the absorbtion of iron, Ive heard that too. But in my case, Ive had my blood iron levels checked and theyre fine, so I dont know where my constant tiredness comes from.
Im on day 17 of my caffeine-free life! I was only going to give up for two weeks, but at the end of two weeks, I had started having chai tea/latte as a substitute for coffee, but when I didnt have my chai one day, I started to get a headache -- withdrawal??! Chai contains black tea -- I dont know how much -- and black tea has caffeine, but Id hoped that it would be in such small amounts that it wouldnt affect me. So, now Ive gone totally clean again: no chai, no chocolate, no nothin! So, Im gonna go anther two weeks to try and properly guage if I feel different/better/worse with no coffee.

                      Re: Given up coffee!!

I definitely will try that! But first, for my own knowledge, I have to make sure Im totally clean and then see how I am. If it aint much different, then Ill certainly re-introduce coffee at some level: decaf or minimal coffee intake or something like that.
