    Re: Poisoned by coffee?

Daughter developed stomach pains and "need to eat" feelings very soon after having her 1st coffee for 3 weeks, so she ate, even though she had not long had lunch, then felt sick because she was over full, but still felt hungry, and "yuck"

The hungry sensation and pains lasted 3 days before the penny dropped. She was fine after a milk Milo at breakfast, but cr*p after a latte for morning coffee.

In the name of science (Lab Med student) she braved a Mocha Java Decaf and had no ill effects, so it appears that she couldnt handle the sudden caffine hit, after being caffine free (too stingy to buy a real coffee) while away at uni, even one cup made her ill.

Her mid year break (when she has time to be ill) experiment is going to be to test her coffee/caffine tollerance, was it the bean or the caffine? :-?

    Maybe Ill need a decaf grinder ;D ;D ;D

My other suggestion is that its not always the coffee... but maybe the lactose in the milk if a person is consuming several milk-based coffees.

I make my Lattes with Lactose free milk and Im fine. If I use full-cream milk and have more than 1 coffee, I start to get stomach problems and diarrhoea.

Michelle; come to think of it, the worst Ive been is after a few espresso. I can have two lattes when I wake up and be fine, even if im really tired and havent eaten. The other weekend I flew to brissy really early and then had a latte and an espresso at First Pour West End and came very close to chucking in my father-in-laws car Much like alcohol, if I line my stomach I do much better. Interesting. Oils and retro-nasals hey (i think thats my favourite word for today )

And ditto with the doctor; with those symptoms who knows what the problem might be. I read everything with a healthy level of suspicion (especially online stuff). If youre concerned definitely see a Dr, even if it turns out to be nothing serious at least youve got more peace of mind.

I would be very careful about medical diagnosis via the Internet, Oton. Someone, including experts, offering medical advice on the internet do not know your medical history. Pgar may be right, but if you assume he is you may overlook other possibilities and put yourself at risk.
Dizziness is also a stress-related symptom (you mentioned anxiety) and the caffeine may have boosted these symptoms.

The other part of Pgars advice was to visit a doctor. Thats the best advice to follow.

    Thanks all for the answers.

I checked my blood pressure one hour after I drink the coffee. It was ok.

Im not sure what was wrong. Anyway I have some health problems. I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ten years ago, and usually I suffer some anxiety. :-/

After I read pgar comments about coffee and fungus I found this article:

    http://www.thinkfungus.com/public/97.cfm?sd=21

    I think its very interesting.

Have a shot at Googling: caffeine diuretic

You may be surprised at what the actual research shows.
I get (in order) using lmgtfy

    Possibly diuretic
    Not confirmed
A "a scientific biological reason why caffeine would make you pee more"
No more a diuretic than water
On the way to being disproved
    mild diuretic

I agree with the probably nots from personal experience but I dont drink a lot of coffee - usually 2 cups a day.

8 glasses to me equals less than 2 litres.

My daughter is one of those water bottle carriers but she does exercise a lot.

Yeah, the modern obsession with sucking on a water bottle all day amuses me. I go to short meetings where people cannot manage for an hour without sucking on their bottles constantly. Then they disappear to the toilet every half hour. I walk for a half hour every morning and I see lots of walkers doing the same thing equipped with their water bottles (in case they get lost in the desert and dehydrate, no doubt) I dont own a water bottle - I just have a drink of water at waking, after my walk, at morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. I do think you need to watch your water intake if drinking espressos or doubles however.

The 8 glasses of water theory is funny. Our farmers lived on cups of tea and beers at night (no water ever) and lived a healthy and full life. What a load of crap the experts feed us these days.

    CB

What the issue is that people take it out of context and then it becomes main stream..

Fluid intake is a must and should be about equal to 8 glasses in volume...

This gets re hashed to = 8 glasses of water and then get re done again to something even more.. ie. 4L

Yes at some stage the systems need a flush and fresh water, but not 4L on top of healthy eating etc...

We have a couple of girls that are alway in the toilets(over hydration) and every time they go to teh Drs their electrolytes and chemistry is down..

So now they mix 4L water with so called Energy and Electrolyte boost drinks..

What ever happened to reality and real world... How did all those before us survive, with no plastic bottles and 4L per day on top of food..

I wonder... Oh... They had public phone boxes and bubblers ;D

My main complaint is nausea; I get nausea when I drink too much coffee.  If I know I will be drinking a fair bit (and not eating enough) I will sometimes pop an antiemetic pill
I also feel incredibly nauseous if I drink too much espresso. Espresso, not caffeine! I can drink stupid quantities of caffeine, but excessive espresso shooting makes me feel really sick. Im told its something to do with the oils and retro-nasals.

Sanch, Id never thought to take anti-nausea medicine before embarking on a espresso-shooting spree. Hehehe, thanks for the tip!

    Look out Dan! ;D ;D ;D
